She will need to be crate trained. Golden Retrievers only need choke collars during a training session, Never leave that on in the crate. just a soft leather or nylon collar.
And she will need dog training soon (3 - 6 months of age).

You will want to start daily grooming right away with a comb and a slicker brush. (watch out for mats behind their ears) As part of your daily play make sure you touch her ears and toes so she gets used to it and when you have to groom these areas it will not be a hassle.

Get gumabone toys for those sharp little teeth. And later Nylabone when her big teeth come in because she will want to chew every thing, mine especially liked wood.

I hope you have a fenced yard. check it to make sure there are no gaps where she can escape.

Always go with her outside, this is the chance to praise her lavishly when she does her duty outside, and she will learn so quick. Also review what plants are in your yard, and make sure none are poisonous to dogs, if so fence them off or rip them out.

to help with house breaking, no water after 8 pm, take her out immediately before you go to bed, and first thing in the morning.

the book I used, which is still highly recommended is "how to raise a puppy you can live with". Since this was my first dog as an adult I needed all the help I could get and this really did help.

My husband loves the dog whisperer on cable tv. and it's fun to watch, but really with a golden retriever if you raise it up right you will not have those issues because they really want to please you and just be part of your family.

One more suggestion, we had a puppy HMO for our lucky girl. And with the many common ailments in golden retrievers, skin allergies, ear infections, I felt it was a good deal.

Enjoy your new Best friend.

Enroll your puppy in a reward based training class. It will help you bond with your puppy and also help prevent most of the 'problem' issues that may come up. It will also help you to correctly deal with any that do pop up. You should be able to get most of the information that will help you build a lasting relationship with the pup. If you start soon, your puppy will have a greater learning ability than if you start late. I am biased of course, but I really do stand by the classes at Petsmart. They are inexpensive ($99 for an 8 week puppy course), its easy to learn, and fun for both you and your puppy...best yet the results are guaranteed! Check it out.. http://www.petsmart.com/training/index.shtml

Is your new dog a puppy? I strongly suggest you start out by crate training him/her when you are gone and during the night it will make potty training much easier. Also while potting training you may want to go outside and watch to be sure he goes potty then when you bring him in praise him. The one thing you will never ever want to do is hit him to discipline him there are much more effective ways to train him. And most of all give him lots of love.
good luck.

first of all, get the dog from the breeder and not from the pet shop. but the dog type that fit in ur house. if your house is small u better buy some toy dogs but if u get big houses maybe u could get retrievers or other big dogs. when the dog introduced to ur house, let her/him explore the house by themself. when u train ur dog, you must be patient to the dog. if u want to make him sit, force him to sit then give him prizes, to this many times until he got what do u mean. don't hit him when he makes mistakes but give him prizes if he do the right things

Please don't hit your dog as a negative or make loud nosies to scare it to listen. I have a pit bull and i have never chained up or hit or yell at it in any way. Puppies learn fast and just want to make you happy but their are puppies and miss haves are going to happen just be ready. Make sure to have play dates with other dogs of all sizes and children and different things to always have your puppy ready for anything. During the summer get something for fleas and ticks. Don't forget their like kids and they grow fast, spend has much time with it has you can.

Watch the "Dog Whisperer" on the National Geographic channel. He's brilliant!

take it for walks, change water daily if not more often.

Feed it meals, like 2 times a day.

Play with your dog, they like that. It's fun. Petting them is fun. And wrestling with them is fun too.

Be sure to ask a vet if any more questions arise. It's free to just ask them if they love pets. If they charge you for it, never take your dog there, they only want money and hate animals.

Don't you think it would have been a good idea to find out how to take care of a pup BEFORE you got the dog?! Dogs are just like children. They rely on you for everything. So please take care of your precious pup!
