The more numbers you can give me and the more specific they are, the better. Thanks!

I donated blood and they tested my cholesterol and the recording when I called said it was 145. I am 18 years old, is that normal? And yes, I know I am young, but I might as well know if I need to worry about later now or not.

yes that is good. The acceptable limit is 200 mg/dL, however, many nutritionists and physicians have been advocating to lower this limit to 180 mg/dL due to the increase in obesity, expecially childhood obesity. If you view your blood work, you will find a category labeled "HDL" (high density lipoprotiens) these are your good-cholesterol. This should be approx. 40 mg/dL. The remaining balance should be LDL (low density lipoprotiens) bad cholesterol.

If you are concerned about your cholesterol, or have a family history of high cholesterol, it is wise to have these levels checked annually. Your physician should also take the time to explain to your what these numbers mean.

Your overall cholesterol number is low, but the "bad" cholesterol, triglycerides are too high. You want it under 150. Your LDL, which is also a bad cholesterol should be under 130. The good cholesterol (it protects your arteries) should be over 45. Watch what you eat, stay away from red meat, fried foods. Increase your fiber intake (fresh fruits and vegetables, oatmeal, whole grains), exercise, and you should start seeing a change. If you don't see a change, then it might be genetics.

Why are you worried about cholesterol when you only start worrying at your mid-20s or 30s? Eat what you can eat, but avoid those trans fats, saturated fats, and partially hydronated oils.
