A very interesting question -- and a great deal has been written on this topic. So, breifly,

In the Hebrew tradition, Sophia (Wisdom, in the Greek: Hochma, in the Hebrew) was considered to have been with God from the beginning of Creation. In Proverbs 8:27-31, Sophia says:

When God set the heavens in place, I was present,
When God drew a ring on the surface of the deep,
When God fixed the clouds above,
When God fixed fast the wells of the deep,
when God assigned the sea its limits-
and the waters will not invade the land,
when God established the foundations of the earth,
I was by God's side, a master craftswoman,
delighting God day after day,
ever at play by God's side,
at play everywhere in God's domain,
delighting to be with the children of humanity.

Sophia, in the biblical creation was not a god, but was a divine being. It is not clear that she was uncreated like Jesus: the word used to refer to her creation also means "acquired" by God. Proverbs 8:22 -"God created me [acquired me] (Sophia) when God's purpose first unfolded." Ecclesiasticus 1:14 -"before all things, Sophia was created." She serves at the heart of the creative process, as Wisdom and as Teacher who was sent by God to save humanity.

Thus some scholars connect the feminine "Lady Wisdom" to the pre-existent Jesus.

The Wisdom referred to is the Logos of God, the Second Person of the Holy Trinity - the Savior Jesus Christ - who is the "Wisdom, Peace and Power of God".

The reason feminine pronouns are used is because "wisdom" in Greek is "sophia", a feminine word.

As for whether it is "spiritual wisdom" or "physical wisdom", I think it's probably more than either of those - "divine wisdom".

From a theological standpoint ... Some people think it a veiled reference to the Holy Spirit. Given that as a starting point, one thought that would logically follow would be that Wisdom, aka the Holy Spirit, is referred to as feminine because the Holy Spirit resides within the Church, aka the Bride of Christ, or it resides with(in) God's Chosen People, however you may wish to define that group, as per the comments in Jewish Scripture stating that God had taken Israel as His Bride. Just a thought. Hey, your guess is as good as mine. Maybe it was just a common literary vehicle of the day, an acceptable way for the writer to get the point across. ;-) ~ Peace & Blessings ~

Pro 1:20 Wisdom crieth without; she uttereth her voice in the streets:

The Word wisdom is in the Hebrew "chokmowth". It translates "Wisdom" as we understand it. It appears to be carnal and spritual wisdom all in one.

The Phrase nathan "She Uttereth" does not explain it as female but does say it "Speaks". It may be female but I can't tell. So the answer would be it is the same Wisdom you can pray for and get from GOD.

I am clueless as to why it is feminine.

Hope that Helps?
GOD bless

contained in the Proverbs, know-how is personified as a girl. Does this mean that God is a girl? i think of you're reading something into Scripture that's no longer there. the belief of the Holy Spirit as "Divine mom" is to no longer be contemporary in Scripture. i think of you're making too a lot approximately of the gender of the members of the Trinity. God may be a male, yet he's not a individual. this does not mean that females are someway no longer almost as good as men. The Bible teaches that we are all equivalent under Christ, and whilst Jesus substitute into on earth, he taken care of ladies those with know and dignity, even however the subculture on the time seen women human beings to be of decrease status than men.

Proverbs are sayings which are akin to poetry and use metaphors, alliteration, rhyme of thought and analogies to communicate wise choices of behavior. Pro (good) verbs (words of action). Wisdom being used in the sense of a personification is merely another way of saying that it should be included in the things that you should desire as much as you would desire a meaningful relationship in your life.

It's just wisdom from God.It doesn't have a gender ,really, it's like patting your car and saying,"She's the best Chevy I've ever owned". You know hurricanes are gender neutral but they give them male and female names.
