It's a genre of music. More specifically, it's somewhere in the general area of rock, but with lyrics that focus on having a broken heart, and a generally sucky life (particularly in the romance arena). Kind of like stereotypical country lyrics to a punk-rock tune in a way. iTunes has an "emo essentials" list somewhere if you can find it (sorry I don't remember how I got to it before, but I think you can just search for "emo"), and listening to the 30-second samples of the songs is a pretty good way to get a general sense of the genre (works for most types of music, not just emo, and you don't even need an iTunes account to listen to the clips).
It's also been extended to refer to the people, mainly teenagers, who listen to that type of music. It describes a person just like goth, prep, jock, or nerd do. The style is associated with wearing a lot of dark colors and tattered clothes, dying one's hair black, and having a beat-up messenger bag with lots of pins on it. It's also a bit like the typical "goth" look. Not sure how well that describes it, but if you do a Google image search for "emo" you'll probably get a better visual than I can give you here anyway.
It's been further extended to describe the supposed emotional state and behavior of these people. Supposedly emo people are depressed, feel misunderstood, and usually cut themselves. But keep in mind that, while some people will try to fit into this to fit in, none of these are actually related in any way to clothing style and music, so the only correlation at this point is people trying to act a certain way that they think is supposed to make them fit in with people they, for whatever reason, feel they're most likely to fit in with.

Emo is, according to a website I visited looking for an answer to this very same question, Emotional. It is all about Emotions, getting sad or upset easily. Some think it had its orgins in punk rock, but it isn't punk.

Emo is short for emotional. It's a school term fpor kid who "feel " more trhan others and feel more in touch with the emotional self than anything else. Emo's have an eemotional view of th e world surrounding them.

"emo's" are best known for self-harming. like cutting wrists
and then also, they're sort of like goths, wearing all black, and crazy hairdos (usually with bangs over one eye or something)
