Mosquitoes are capable of carrying and spreading a wide variety of infectious diseases. In the tropics they are responsible for malaria, dengue, filariasis, yellow fever, japanese encephalitis. In the US mosquitoes spread West Nile, St Louis, Lacrosse viruses. Maria can be prevented by drugs, Yellow fever, and Japanese encephalitis have vaccines. The best way to prevent becoming infected is to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes in the first place. Use of insect repellant, bed nets are useful. Reducing the numbers of mosquitoes in an area is also an effective measure but involves pesticide spraying and the elimination of standing water (where the mosquitoes lay their eggs and develop).
