Stride Gum wrapper edible?

I have a friend who told me that stide gume wrapers were edible, then he ate the wrapper in front of me, are the wrapper supposed to be edible?

Stride use to market their gum with edible wrappers years ago and when issues arose in the media they changed the wrappers.
