I believe it was someone catching the e-coli virus off a package of bagged spinach. They are saying every other packaged food is okay for now, just stay away from the spinach until they can single out the bad bags. However if you do feel some flu like symptoms you should probably go to the hospital to get checked out, but I think you will be fine.

Lucky for you the lettuce had a lot of Fiber in it. It will quickly pass through your system without leaving any after effects.
Lucky your lettuce wasn't spinach. I hear they're peeling Popeye wannabe's off the toilets back East.

You mean this is serious? And do you mean spinach? It's not "poisonous" per say, but contains e coli, a type of bacteria found in animal stomachs including yours.
If you already ate it, there's nothing you can do. But if you start feeling sick with nausea, vomitting, diarrhea, intestinal cramping, go to the emergency instead of typing questions for douchebags like me to answer.

The problem is e coli in spinach, not lettuce. If your bag was a salad mix that contained spinach, then maybe. If it was just lettuce you'll be fine.

If you become ill, call your doctor. I don't know if there is preventive treatment available. Your doctor may have the answer to that question.
Earlier today I heard that it's best to rinse packaged salad greens thoroughly in warm water and drain well.
Well, if you'll excuse me, dinner (with salad) awaits.

According to Yahoo News, it is spinach, not lettuce, that allegedly has the e-coli.

if you're not sick right now as you read this answer, chances are you'll be ok. and by the way, it was spinach not lettuce that they found had E.coli. so you'll be alright.

it's the spinach. Don't worry unless you ate spinach. If you ate it you'll know real soon, and go to the hospital.
