The fault you describe has nothing to do with degaussing or gaussing for that matter . What to do ? OK switch set off and unplug it from the wall socket ,to be safe insert a screwdriver under the Eht connector and short the blade to the graphite coating of the pic tube , don't hold the metal part of the screw driver though ! if you did get a shock it is only like a shock from a car spark plug, nobody has ever been harmed by the volts in all my 45 years of working on them ! OK having discharged the pic tube pull the eht connector from the tube and clean it with metho spirits and also clean the tube where the connector fits . If the eht lead is in good condition and the surrounding glassware clean and dry and you still get arcing try determine where it is coming from, if from the tube neck then the tube has lost its vacuum and is deceased ! Anyway see how you go this far , you may surprise yourself and fix it !!

The symptoms you explain are from magnetization of the screen. The cure is to move the item that is causing the magnetization further away from the tv (often it is a loudspeker or subwoofer). Then, switch the power off and on several times, leaving it on for one minute which is long enough for the internal degaussing coil to come to full current. After a few times the magnetization of the shadow mask inside the picture tube will be removed.
The man goes on to explain if this not work you will need a Degaussing Tool. It sounds like the noise is a problem that causing the problem and may need fixed. Sometimes with Labor being as it is, may be better to buy another TV.

You need a degaussing coil to do that but that probably won't help for your problem. Sounds like there may be arcing in the picture tube or a problem with the high voltage circuit in the set. If you can see the neck of the CRT light up brightly intermittently then you have arcing. Could be bad HV capacitors, bad sweep transformer, or bad picture tube. If it is worth trying to repair take it to a repair shop for an estimate.

Get a small magnet thats not too powerful and just place it on the screen and move it slowly until you've covered most of the screen. Hope this helps!
