A chiari 1 malformation is a protrusion of the brain (cerebellum specifically) through the foramen ovale (the opening in the base of your skull that leads to your vertibrae . Usually the spinal cord comes through here.) In a Chiari 1 the cerebellum protrudes slightly through ther foramen ovale.

Can you die from this? No. It is a malformation associated with other diseases like spina bifida. If you are otherwise healthy it may be a borderline diagnosis and maybe not even true. A second opinion may be of value. As for if it is a disease, I'd have to say no. It is more along the lines of a birth defect. It is something that is simply normal for you and has been present since your birth. If you are asymptomatic, don't worry. If you are worried, get a second opinion. I'd see a neuro surgeon or get him to consult a different radiologist.

Relax. This has been there sinse your birth.

Hope I've helped.
