I think its because with pork, all of the meat, even the really nasty stuff, is used in human food. Human food makes the companies more money than pet food. It is only the by-products from fish and beef that go into pet food. With pork all that stuff ends up as hot dogs and potted meat, chitterlings and souse meat. Even the brains and entrails are used to make human food.

here is the answer given from PURINA on why pork isnt used in cat food:
While we do incorporate pork as an ingredient in some of our pet food products, we do not manufacture any dog or cat food products with pork as one of the primary ingredients. There is no reason from a nutrition standpoint not to use pork for pet foods. However, market research studies indicate that there isn't a lot of consumer demand for dog or cat food products which contain pork as a primary ingredient. Should that perception change, we would re-evaluate the use of pork as a primary ingredient in pet food products

It's not that common but I have bought ham canned cat food at Wegman's grocery store. Also found duck canned cat food.

It must not be appealing to cats. Believe me, the commercial pet food manufacturers will try and have tried everything to get pets to prefer their food over another.

I am sure pork spoiles more easily and is too fatty. The not so fatty pork is reserved for human consumption and not for cats.

None of our cats want to respond. The Abyssinian says, however, that she is not Jewish although she does follow Islamic food requirements.

Um...I don't think hogs are a natural prey for domestic cats. ^_^ Of course there are probably other flavors that shouldn't be--like beef. Ever seen a tabby take down a bull? It's quite a spectacle!
