Most people keep them open and try to distract themselves by looking at things around the room. I hope your dentist has an interesting ceiling - I've got posters on mine.
My old dentist when I was a kid had a plaster ceiling with a simple pattern. When you've counted all the dots once, there's no point in doing it again.
But don't stare into our eyes - do have any idea how freaky that is? Some people did that to watch the reflection in my glasses, until I got non-reflective lenses.
BTW, there's no need to close your eyes during Xrays - if Xrays can go thru bone, then a little eyelid won't stop them. It just seems to be a reflex with most people.

If your that worried, it might be better to just forget "what your having done" most dentist's have earphones with music and even bring your own eye mask of sorts. Sounds silly but you really are just going to be a big ball of tension, making it much harder on the Dentist but more importantly "YOU". Even nitrous oxide will help you also.
Good Luck ! :)

Whatever is comfortable to you. The dentist probably isn't even noticing if your eyes are open or closed. You may be looking into his nostrils though, unless he is wearing a mask, which he should be.

I just went to the dentist today. :)
I keep my eyes open and look around the room. I find it helpful if I can see what's coming my way, rather than get a surprise owie.

Keep your eyes open and usually they will try to talk to you. You'll fall asleep if you close them I asked my dentist if he had anyone fall asleep on him and he said all the time.

I agree with Sea Bass; keep them shut once the procedure has begun so no spray from the water, etc, gets in your eyes.

keep them open, always keep them open. when you close your eyes you have more attention focused on that one thing there doing to you, making it hurt more. when your eyes are open your mind is wondering around looking around the room and stuff therefore not giving all your attention to the pain
