No not wasted...and greatly appreciated by those who understand what freedom is,and how we got and keep that same freedom!!!!!!!! Somehow it has become politically incorrect to stand for anything meaningful ! Terrorist kill, mame, attack, threaten, and we find ourselves in a debate about wether they should be given the same rights as Americans when they are captured! It sickens me,...especially for men like you Sir,who have put their life on the line, and for all those who have given their life! Those who think along the lines of talking and dealing with terrorist need to wake up! We are dealing with their murders, isn't that enough dealing?
So I hope you know alot of Americans appreciate you,and all those like you! It's not in vain, just some people are asleep right now, or trying to find some false safety in denial! I agree,...those who come in the right way should be welcomed,...but America MUST begin to take care of herself, or it's not going to be safe for native Americans, or people from other places! Other countries do what they have to do for their own! But for America, it's give , but don't say or do anything to upset anyone at all, it's got to change!!!

You have made some very valid points here. I can remember not so long ago how I admired Americans and everything that came out of America. Looking back at history, at the end of the second world war when Americans came to Japan, under the leadership of McArthur the soldiers were given chewing gum and chocolate to distribute to the Japanese children, such a wise and warm gesture that made the losers feel the victors were good people. McArthur helped establish a new democratic Japan with the help of the Japanese. BUT, all this changed with Vietnam. US attacked a country killing thousands in an unprovoked attack, used chemical weapons and germ warfare, then left the country with millions of mines that the US placed there and not feel responsible that these mines are killing young children every single day right up to now. More recently we've had Afghanstan and Iraq and it looks like its not going to end there. All the wise policies have been usurped by war for profit. All the strategists have been overtaken by the fools. Politicians and Presidents have no remorse when they are caught lying, never apologize, in fact they act as if it's some kind of virtue!! So, your 30years in the Marines I believe were noble years, but the military now is no longer like this and that is why the world hates America. American policy is also warped and only out to make profit for US and big corporation (Last week a coca-cola company opened in Afghanistan, where the people still suffer the trauma of war and malnutrition).
Those immigrants (legal and illegal) who are entering the US now are a godsend, because coming from where they do, they have a more positive agenda. They will make America great once again.

FIGHTING FOR FREEDOM:
A lot of people you wish to set free have been killed. The rest have been thrown into civil dissarray and (soon) civil war. Im going to be realistic and say that it's impossible for a country to have drastic political change like that without casualties; leaving a totalitarian government is never a smooth business.
However, were the US and UK government realistic with the war? Did they think they could invade ANY country and impose a system and values which the citizens didn't understand? Look at iraq: is it better? Despite the "freedom" they have, are they actually any better? There is MORE violence, there are MORE deaths. Nowadays, Saddam's death squads are nice compared to the sectarian gangs that ravage the entrie country.
AID:
AID!? It's not really aid man: I hope you understand that aid is given in exchange for contracts: you give them money to spend back into you. It's not just happy handouts from your governments, it's not all nicey nice. You're not doing a country favours when the money cannot be recirculated into the economy; the outflow from the currency circulation means that it can never help economic growth.
HELPING OTHER COUNTRIES:
There was no immediate call for a halt of fighting in Lebanon? The US was very happy to wait for a "favourable outcome" for the war (ie, let the Israelis continue fighting till they win) but they did NOTHING before the outbreak of Israeli hostilities to diplomatically approach the legitimate lebanese government with a warning on tightening border security. Surely even you must agree that such a war could have been prevented if the correct diplomatic solutions were followed.
I'm not saying it was America's fault that nothing was done, but you can't turn a blind eye to such things if you are the worlds most powerful country. With the power comes resposibility. However, the US has consistently failed to react appropriately and responsibly to international tensions.
I am British.
As you can see I am not patriotic about the US and UK's actions in the world. However, I cannot deny that in some ways the actions of our governments have been well minded. I also have a huge amount of respect for soldiers who fight in wars because I know that people right at the bottom really believe in trying to both protect their country and help the world. (well, most of them)
I can speak for a lot of people in the UK when I say that it is the government that I am against. I'm not an anarchist: (self empowerment is nice, but completely unimplementable) and i'm not a paranoid anti war flower boy. I think that the underlying idea that America is founded on is wonderful and that there are a lot of genuinely great people and places in your country. Burgers are good. Freedom is good. Democracy is good.
It's just the government that people like me hate. Everyone makes mistakes, thats true, but there is no room for mistakes when it is a well rescourced government like the US or UK dealing with situations that could kill thousands and affect millions who are NOT in their electorate. Think democracy: at what point was there proof that the Iraqi people wanted a western system imposed on them?

Money, the US has been top of the food chain for some time now and is likely to remain so for at least 10 years.
Only the tiniest fraction of the people who would like to take your country at its word and try living there could ever hope to do so legally, it cost $ thousands eg. to get a temp visa/work permit even if you marry an American citizen.
The American population and gene pool has been pretty stagnant now for a long time, many European countries allow far more immigration and meet the definition of melting pot better.
What America does for the world always has to be justified and judged by what its leaders at the time take to be in its own best interests, you didn't even join the rather obviously 'correct' side in WW2 until after the Japanese attacked you and declared war.
I don't think an adult would ask if the last 30 years of his life were wasted fighting for freedom, I would bet you are 15 and asking this hypothetically, you couldn't make it to 50 w/out realising that freedom is highly relative and the US has spent much more time & money propping up puppet regimes, when do you imagine you were literally fighting for anyone elses freedom?
Brave men and women? The US drafts kids when fighting unpopular wars and is currently using up it's volunteer forces fighting an undeclared war to control the oil markets as the first Gulf war did for all of a decade.
Reality check, very few people hate individuals when they get to know them but when you temporarily hold the richest position at the top of the world economy you can expect as much envy as admiration and you can never expect any country you help to save (like France) to be grateful, how grateful would you be if you had to be saved? It's too humiliating.

First off, ,much has to do with the press. It's all about ratings and sensationalism. If someone spends 10 cents more on a loaf of bread then they need to be investigated for capital mismanagement. If someone got a parking ticket its total disrespect for the law.
Now I am not into politics much but I love my country. Being I work for airline I got to see many places and have seen how others live and of course hear about the greater Satan. The problem that I see is many think we get into other folks business. Even if we did do it for humanity's sake everything assumes there is an angle. Oil, land rights for our bases, better trade rites, you get the picture.
Now you have to remember we are the big guy on the block. You have the sucks up and those that are intimidated by us.. The suck ups ask for help but once they get it and we are gone they look for someone else to suck up to. They totally forget what you did for them. As far as the intimidated ones they will never see us doing anything right. No matter what we do it was just plain wrong, or it should have been done this way or that way......nothing ever appeases them...they could have done better but it was laundry day so they couldn't help etc etc.

The people that hate America and Britain come from countries that are run by dictators, have no freedom of speech, have been brainwashed since birth to hate us.
But underneath they admire our way of life, our freedom, so when they get their chance to come to our countries they jump at the chance.
And as for your 30 years of service in the marines, Well we wouldn't be sat here today if it wasn't for the brave men and women who served not just for their country, but for peoples rights and freedom around the world.
Thank you for my freedom and my children.
Never forget America and Britain will always be there first, no matter what the cowards of this world say.

Is the idiocy of the age...after all the poison has been thrown out there by the losers of power, here in the states. Bush just seems to be the point of hate but it reflects more the loss of power than anything else.. they just have a convenient target. How else would the world know what is going on here? Is just about the only thing that is consistantly in the media.
This demoralizing at home (and around the world) is having its toll on the troops..they are wondering why they are being treated in such a manner.
Having come here from another country makes it even more infuriatingly evident, there is a move on to belittle this country and its leaders, right along with the enemies of this country. Seems like a losing situation and the devil may care.
The military has performed admirably for many generations.. they are well aware of what they are fighting for and are willing to give their lives in that defense. But there remain those who are willingly selling their country out, just for an inflated ego trip. Fabrications, outright falsehoods and any other method seems to be ok to them... yet not being concerned about those who are out there defending their right to say what they do.
Then there are those who blindly go on, knowing not what is actually in store for them should the war not be won. Many of these people go far beyond pacifism.. they go to the edge of treason. And this is what our troops are seeing at home.. sure makes them proud and satisfied, to see they are protecting those who are actually opposed to them. Yet they profess to honor the troops but oppose the war.. rather oxymoronic.
As I proposed in another topic.. the troops are sending pics home.. the only ones that ever get into the media are those which belittle the forces.. but there are many which are much in reverse to what we see and read in the media.. I often wonder why they don't appear? It would not help rile up the infidels. The very ones who are in constant danger here at home. All there has to be is one slip up of our agents and we are hit again.. yet these same people are fighting against things designed to help keep them safer. It is not just a mixed up world, it is most rampant in our own country. And it is a deadly game being played.
One other post requires a response.. the palestinians have been offered numerous times, to have peace and a land of their own.. but they continued to refuse it. Then cry foul! This new venture may be their last chance at having their own country.. and yet a portion of the administration is still adamant about the destruction of Israel and further, will not even negotiate with Israel. Where does the blame actually lie, after more than 50 years?
To tie in more closely to your original question.. the hatred for the US by the muslims has been fomenting for many centuries..not just the US but western civilization.. the US only being the main target as if it falls, the rest will fall into place very rapidly and be no threat to the Islamists who plan to dominate the world. Sort of like another era which spawned a second world war. They are under a commandment from their prophet to do so.. make Islam the worlds only religion.. meaning, either you convert or die. All muslims are bound by this commandment.. if they do not agree with it, they become considered as part of the infidel and are put to death.. has no one wondered why there has been no outcry from muslims concerning the terrorists? If they do they are to be put to death. They have fear of their own religion.
Those around the world who hate us are not appreciative of the reason we are actually at war... they will find out, just as many other countries are.. they are to be targets also, eventually. It is a world wide effort by a determied enemy of the western world. Not just the US.

What America wants is to have everyone think the way we do, and we are seen as bullies. saying do as I say not as I do. For instance, China, if they want a long range missle let them have one, I am sure we have several of them ourselfs, and are we not suppling Iran Iraq Pakistan, and Afganistan with high tech guns etc. And then we get bent out of shape because someone wants to build a missle, when we supplied them with the materials. It really seems like it is all about money, alot of corrupt politicians out there...Where is our support when a disaster comes? they are off fighting in another country, We portray an invincible country, and the time is getting closer all the time to a major stike again on U.S. soil. We have practically no security at our ports (Long Beach) alot of shipments are not even checked. And then we have americans who hate America ( Timothy Mc Veigh) Oklahoma, I for one think that there is good and bad in everyone, why then sabatoge a whole country? And one more thing, I think how they are handling those 7 marines in Camp Pendleton is like watching our country turn its' back on young men that went over there to serve their country, and this is how we treat them??I believe that all men are created equal and have the same god given rights as everyone else. Does the Constitution have any meaning anymore or is it and the words just going to fade away? I know that is quite an honour to be in the service, and that the Marines are one of the best, but to many are dying needlessly..And how can we as a country have the nerve to say "GOD Bless America", when our children are not allowed to have prayer in the morning?and on our money to take away in God we Trust. I think that our Faith in the Will of God, will be the answer we all want...Bless You and "Thank You" for serving our country!

Not wasted brother...who gives a rats @ss what the rest of the world thinks...look on any news channel and see how hypocritical and corrupt they all are...their own militaries kill their people in some countries and the others are such cowardly welfare states the no decent person would want to live there (for the taxes if nothing else)
My dad was career navy and fought in three wars...had 5 boys and 1 girl and all of us served. 3 Army, 2 Air Force and 1 Navy.
Got no tolerance for Libs who whine and complain but never served. He!! with them.

Depends on what part of the world you are talking about if it is Europe. The Occupied countries house the German soldiers, and they were a disciplined Army, then when liberation and Americans came to town it was "grab your wife daughters" the Americans could not be trusted. Over time the story got worse. Middle East And Far East, blame rests on inconsistant foreign policy. military presence, and lack of understanding as they say; "East is East, and West is West, and never shall the two meet"
