Hi. I am an amateur translator. I just started it. I am supposed to translate a novel called "A singular man", but there are some that confuses me. could you help me?

In this brightness everything was cheerful. It was as in some tale. By simply touching objects I felt busy.

He said he felt busy. What does that mean? How could he feel busy by touching objects?

Have you ever been restless and had nothing and to do so you walk around the room or the house and touch the figurine on the mantle possibly turning it a little bit or touching the photo graph of a loved one or a stuffed animal all the while little things are going through you head like that looks better or I remember when this picture was taken or aunt Emma got me this. You are moving around and keeping active and that is what he means about feeling busy.

I would guess "alive", as in fully engaged in life. Just a guess. By the way, your English is better than a great many Americans that ask and answer questions on yahoo answers!

On second thought, I'll go along with britbloke - it sounds idiomatic and, as a Brit, if he recognizes it, I'd go with him!

it could mean that he felt his purpose was useful, meaningful. the english language is the hardest to comprehend, because of all the nuances and similar sounds but different meanings of words that sound the same.
