You didn't say how old you are? So, some quick answers:
If you want to play with you dog outside, a great size and dog for that matter is a boarder-collie size. No too big, not too small.

If you want a larger dog, a golden is very good around people, and little ones.

If you want a small - cuddle on the couch or bed - size, The King Charles is the nicest dog you can get.

Good luck, and remember to be a responsible owner. Pick-up poops if you are a public place; spay or neuter your dog; spend time with your dog ever day. They will never let you down.

Since you're gone for a big chunk of the day...try to adopt an older animal. Puppyhood seems cute from the outside, but all the housetraining and teething and crying through the night....Ugghhh!!!
I recently adopted a 4 year old pomeranian from a rescue group. Whereas adopting from a shelter saves a dog in imminent danger of being euthanized, if you go through a rescue group (they're all over the internet try www.1800saveapet.com) they have the dog living in their house with them and will know any issues the dog may have ahead of time, like biting or digging or barking all night. This way you're making an informed decision about what exactly you're getting into with a dog.

As for breed...that depends on you. If you're very active and like to go for long walks every single day...then border collies are awsome dogs, very very smart. If you're more of a homebody, then get a dog that's more low-key, like a basset hound. (I know these are extreme generalizations, but you get my drift.) Any rescue group worth their salt will try to place you with an animal that suits your lifestyle.

No matter the type of dog though, a daily walk is the absolute most important thing to keep your dog happy. Even if you have a big back yard. Check out the book by Caesar Millan "Caesar's Way", it's a great book for those looking to bring a dog into the family and it has a chapter on dog selection.

Good luck to you!

I have a Siberian Husky mix. We got her from the humane society as an adult dog. She's medium sized, only 36 pounds. She's an excellent dog, good with kids, came to us fully trained. We have a big yard, too, and about an acre is inside an invisible fence. When I go to work she likes to be outside if it's between 20'F and 80'F. She is the perfect dog!

I would recommend an adult dog from the humane society. You know how big they will be and most of them are already housetrained. They don't need constant supervision like puppies. Just about any breed could be a good choice for you.

It depends on how active you want to be with your dog. For instance if you need a dog that you can run with a 2-3 times a week maybe a lab, if you want to do agility with your dog maybe a border collie, if you want a dog that you don't have to walk so much possibly a Chihuahua. I would suggest you research breeds see which one will fit your lifestyle. Then study about that breed and learn what it will need. Get your pup into training make him part of your family, not just an ornament for your house. Good luck with the research and finding the right one for you!

I think that the best dog would be the dog that picks you out. If you are looking for a unique dog check out your local humane organizations and/or log on to www.petfinder.com. You can pull up all the shelter dogs in your area. Many of them are even purebreds...I personally like the Springer Spaniel..they have good temperments (if they come from a reputable breeder) and love to play but can also be mellow. They are a medium sized dog...if you want to see what they look like: http://www.akc.org/breeds/english_springer_spaniel/index.cfm... alot of it really comes down to personal preference. If you want a purebred....make sure you go through a reputable breeder....you can find them through www.AKC.org. You would click on the breed you like and then go to breeder referral. The parent breed club will have the contacts for your area. Dont forget to check out the breed rescues too for a purebred and the shelters for mixed and some purebreeds. Good Luck finding your new dog.

Labs, retrievers and dogs of that sort get bored easily and can become destructive as a result. I recommend either a shitzu or border collie. I've had both and they are great dogs around adults and children.

standard poodle for the size is wise but for loving get something from the shelter they are easy to spot if they are nuts and they are fixed and shots already and the size is already there play or walk several canidates and ask to feed the finalist if he growls at you taking a toy or the bowl away hes messed up for children and most adults agression like thats a no-go

You might want a large, relatively calm dog since you have a toddler living there. Check the local SPCA for dogs up for adoption. Or if you want a breed, try labs or similar dogs.

Good luck!
