What ever you do, start breathing first! Xanax, Klonipan, Ativian and other benzo's are NOT the answer!!! They are highly addictive and pure hell to get off of!! You need to train yourself with breathing, centering and find a list of people you can call to help get you out of that mind set. If you know you will be in a situation where you have problems, take someone with you. Keep a paper bag handy if you hyperventilate. I had to do that for many years while I was on the above mentioned drugs. I feel your frustration and empathize with you. A counselor can help with many other grounding options for I could type 5 pages of options for you. Drugs will help only for a short time. The grounding options will help for life.

An anxiety attack is a short period of strong fear that happens for no reason that you know of. An anxiety attack is also known as a panic attack. An anxiety attack can be a one-time event, or can become an ongoing problem. If you have two or more anxiety attacks in a month, you may have a condition called panic or anxiety disorder. If anxiety attacks become severe (very bad), they may keep you from living a normal life. An anxiety attack is not life-threatening. See a caregiver to make sure your symptoms are caused by anxiety and not something more serious. You may develop other problems such as alcohol or drug abuse or depression if your anxiety attacks are not treated. Frequent anxiety attacks can cause many problems with your mood, work, and relationships. People who have an anxiety disorder are more likely to have thoughts of harming themselves. If you or someone you know has thoughts of hurting themselves or others, tell a caregiver right away. Treatment can help decrease the amount and severity of anxiety attacks.

I did have bad anxiety attacks and I was so set on getting rid of it on my own, when the anxiety would set in, it's was like everything was moving so fast ! What I would do is go for nice walks and inhale and exhale and on days that I could not walk I would just lay down and inhale, exhale, that would make me fall asleep and I would get up feeling just fine and after my long walks I was completely rid of it. For me it worked without medication, I was so determined. You could maybe try this but you have to keep at it, now I am not saying not to take medication, what worked for me does not mean it will work for everyone. I am strong willed person, the day that I said I was quitting smoking, I never touched a cigarette again and all the weight that I put on had to go off and it did so all I can say to you is try it and the best of luck to you, I know what you are going through, medication does help but we have to help ourselves also. Now this dates 7 years ago and I have never had another attack. It is worth the try

I also have anxiety disorder and i know that you don't always need meds to control it. You should start by seeing a psychologist, who will be able to teach you techniques on how to stop an anxiety attack. If the techniques do not help, that is usually when they start trying meds. I was told that when I feel a panic/anxiety attack coming on, focus my attention on one still object, and start counting slowly all while doing deep breathing. This really helps. There are many more techniques as well. I wish you the best of luck and should you have any questions feel Free to contact me.

i would STRONGLY recommend trying anything BUT a prescription drug first. I was in your exact same position and within 6 months I was incorrectly diagnosed as being bipolar and (unnecessarily!) put on an anti-seizure medication! TOTALLY unnecessary. Finally a friend of mine, who is a medical diagnostician and has a background in quantuum physics, brought me back to reality! She recommended a vitamin called "5HTP" which is quite literally a natural prozac. It acts to help stabilize the seratonin in our brains and bring it to the appropriate level. Start with two tablets a day, working your way up to 4 over a couple week period. If it doesnt work for your particular case, there is no harm done; sadly the same cannot be said for all of the pharmaceuticals on the market today. I had a facial twitch for 3 months AFTER I stopped taking zoloft :( Maybe meds are best for you, but I would recommend the 5HTP, get it from a website like webvitamins.com for the best deal, thats where I get mine. Also, you'd be surprised how many ailments a great chiropractor can heal! Their work not only fixes subluxations in the spine, but in doing so, it actually helps our nervous system to work most effectively. So with a little 5HTP and a good chiropractor, you might be able to avoid unnatural pharmaceuticals altogether. Good luck and health to you =)

Go to www.emofree.com and download the free manual. If it makes sense, order the $60 video.
If you don't have $60, you can try it from the manual. it is like acupuncture without needles, tapping the energy points.
My son tried it with the manual; the problem is how fast and how hard to tap. He says tap hard, but don't bruise, and tap around 3 times a second.
It helps a lot, not as perfect as the claim, but it does help considerably.
craig came up with this. he said he's an engineer and when something is broken, engineers expect to fix it. He was horrified to learn that psychologists and psychiatrists take your money for years with absolutley no benefit.
He claims EFT has permanently cured vets with PTSD for years, in one day.
Also, look for Yahoo group Avoidant personality. There are others with your same problem there.

I have read some litterature about panic attacks. But they allways seem to have a more scientific approach and that is nothing I need in my struggle to survive those horrible panic attacks. This is a "hand on" and very practical book. I felt it was written to me. I am sure that you are going to feel the same.
Joe Barry writes exactly how I think. The examples are perfectly described. And the method is genius. I recommend this book and thanks Joe Barry for writing it. It changes your life

First off, tell yourself that anxiety attacks are scary, but you'll not die from it. Take slow, deep breaths--breathe into a paper bag if you need to. Sometimes sipping at cold water helped me, too. Once you learn some relaxation techniques, it gets easier and easier to overcome them.
You also might want to meet with a therapist or psychiatrist. I recommend seeking medicine as a last resort, but it's okay to take meds if you need them.
Also, some good lavender incense. Lavender's scent naturally helps the body relax.

Take a deep breath, hold it (not too hard), bare down and let the air out slowly. Rub your neck with your index finger and thumb along your arteries (hold your hand to your neck as if you are going to choke yourself...but don't choke yourself). Watch what you eat. Less breads and starches (like rice). More beef...don't ask...just do it. Eat less. Drink water...lots of it. Exercise, smart exercises (aerobic-under supervision or at least a regimen from a trusted source). Think about what it is that is bothering you. Financial stress? Relationships? Life? It will be ok! Really. Walk it off.

My solution may not the the one for you. I have a litany of Xanax, Klonopin, and Ativan for my anxiety disorder. It all affects me differently, and I know which to take for how I feel.
Therapy and all that has never worked for my panic/anxiety attacks.
You may need to see a doctor, they won't necessarily prescribe you meds, but they can and do give tips on helping to ease the severity of the attack.
I feel for ya. Good luck.
