The Stats: most depressions last 2 weeks to two years. Only 10% of cases last more than 2 years. People do relapse in symptoms, but the relapses tend to be easier to treat.

About half of people with depression recover within 6 months. But the longer you are depressed, the harder it becomes to treat. However, the longer you are in remission the less likely it is that you will relapse.

Older people may have brief periods of sadness, but your chances of getting depression actually DECREASE with age.

Speaking from experience, your chances of recovery when you are committed to the recovery process are very good. Lifestyle, continued treatment, and work on your own will definitely help.

My advice would be:
-find a therapist who you like (regardless of the therapy they use)
-don't drink. ever. (increases your chances of relapse by a huge amount...even if you only drink occasioinally)
-get a routine that works for you (lots of sleep, healthy eats, etc...)
-create a social support network
-hold on to the idea that you can and will recover

Good luck to you.

I sure hope things can get better. I have been struggling with depression since I was 15yrs old I am now 34. But I am also bipolar too. My depression has never gone away even when I am manic. Lets all just hope that one day they can make a med that everyone and anyone who has depression could take and it would get ridof it. I am in therapy and on med's and I truely do hope that one day I wont be depressed. I know that being depressed so long makes you even more depressed for being depressed. All the best of luck to you.

Cleeps could not have put it better. I have been depressed for over 20 years. I have finally found my way and I have been able to get off medication. Life does get better!
