I remember oleo from the 1940's, when WWII ( I was a child) was happening. It was a white substance (like margarine is today), but it came in a plastic bag, with a capsule in it. When you broke the capsule, you kneaded it in the bag with the oleo, and the oleo turned yellow to resemble butter. My sisters and I would take turns kneading it because it came in a one pound bag, and took quite awhile to mix it. There was a shortage of butter during WWII. It certainly did not taste like the margarine of today does. So ends the history lesson for the day. lol

It won't age me because my mother told me about it. A long time age there was no margarine, people bought oleo. It was some form of shortening my mother said it was a vegetable shortening. It came in a ball form and there was a yellow bead of some type that you pushed on till it popped. Then you had to knead the ball till the yellow was distributed throughout the whole thing. Then you could open it and use it.

Oleo was a substitute for butter that became available during WWII when butter was rationed. It's like margarine today.
