I have a female akita that has just started her first season...we think. SHe cleans herself costantly so we are not sure how long she has had it but I noticed spotting on her bed when she woke up this morning. How long will she be in her season? How many times a year will she be in her season? Can we give her anyhting or does she need anything while she is in her season?

A dog is in season about 2 weeks and is most fertile on her 9th through 11th day. Dogs are in season about twice a year, every 6 months but his varies. She does not need anything special, but make sure you keep her away from males. If you want to breed her do not do it until she is about 2 yrs old, third to fourth season, and do not do it more than once a year.

The total cycle is 28 days, she will bleed for approx. 2 weeks the best thing to use is pull up diapers with a hole cut in the back for the tail she can come into season multiple times or just once a year. All she needs while in season is to be made sure that she isn't around any male dogs that aren't neutered.

Heat cycles are approx 3 weeks, they are ready to breed on the 9-11 days generally. Most dogs come into heat every 6 months. Are you going to breed her? If so, please wait until she is 2years and have her hips certified first. You don't need to give her anything special, she will be fine. Just keep her where no unwanted males can get to her. Good Luck

Spay her immediately. Call animal control or the SPCA if you can't pay.
There are too many Akita's as there is. We don't need anymore of them.
DON'T BREED OR BUY WHILE SHELTER ANIMALS DIE!!!
