usually you don't care if something has already been invented
if you have never seen the thing and you need it you just build it and go with it
if you think the thing might be very marketable and you think it might be patentable, then you can apply for a pantent and eventually learn if a pantent exists
if you aren't planning to market it massively then it doesn't matter, or if it isn't patentable or not already patented, then it still doesn't matter

Put it this way, if you thought of a wonderful invention, theres already 80 million other people who thought of it, and they probably have more money than you.

You really don't unless you see it, or it is documented in a reputable source, such as an encyclopaedia. Patents granted in different countries and museums archives are also good sources. PS, good luck in your hunt.
