An immigrant is someone that moves their "home" from the country of their origin to another land to live. Some are doing so "legally" - going through the "red tape" and paying the fees needed to do so. And some - because they don't like the laws and can't afford the fees - seem to just come here anyways, or do it "illegally".
Why do they do it? They feel that if they live amongst the "rich", they too will become "rich" (or at least live better than they did in their old country). They come here, but they feel they are "forced" to, so that is why they resist "assimilating" to the culture of our country. They really desire to remain in their "homeland", but can't survive like they wish to.

you know what an immigrant is because you ask in your question "why would someone move from their homeland to someplace new?" The reason they move is because they are not getting either what they need or what they want from their home country.

An immigrant is someone who is not born in the US or another country but is living there. When they become a citizen of that state or country the are no longer a immigrant. Immigrants move from their homeplace mainly b/c they want a better life for them or their families.

They move from their homeland hoping for a better life in a new country. That takes a lot of guts if you ask me. A new way of life,a new language, different laws, it would all be pretty scary. Some of them move because they already have family living in the new country.

An immigrant is someone who migrates (moves)to another country. Several different reasons for doing so, the lack of opportunities in their own country. Such as employment, education, maybe crime. They probably just want a better shot at a good life.

My grandparents were IMMIGRANTS to the United States from Poland. They immigrated for the better opportunities for themselves and their children -- that included the opportunity for the children to GAIN an education instead of being stuck forever being peasants and uneducated. This made such an impression that MY parents BOTH attended College, got their Graduate Degrees, and my siblings and I got our Graduate Degrees too -- and all this from Grandparents (who at best) had a 2nd Grade Education, and had to learn to speak English quickly when they arrived because there was NO English as a Second Language Courses for them. Yes, they worked hard, at manual labor jobs -- but for them -- the sacrifice was worth it because they saw our parents do well in the end, and our parents took care of the grandparents in their elderly years.

That is interesting most of America originated form immigration. Our ancestors most likely were not native to America. People move for various reasons could be more rights and priviledges than in their previos country. Could be violence that is unavoidable were they were or the poverty level could have been unavoidable. They realize they must earn their keep and work very hard doing so. I am American French, Irish,Welch,Scottish, German, Cherokee native American, & African. Notice most of my ancestors were not originally from America and also notice I don't call them INDIANS because Columbus mistook America for India..ha ha people to this day in the millenium call NATIVES to AMERICA "Indians".

immigrant means coming in settler. People first came to the United States for gold. It was said when you come here you just turn over a rock and there is gold. Many people came to America for a new life a better life and a free life. They wanted better for themselves and their future kin. People still today come to America for hopes of something new and better.

An immigrant is a person who choices to live in another land than the land of their birth. An illegal immigrant is a drain on society, a law breaker, and should be sent back.
