Usually because they are sad.

I don't understand "real answer" because there can be many. Perhaps there was something that you delayed saying to that person and now it's too late. That would be regret. Perhaps it is because you had built your day to day life around that person and now you had no idea what you were going to do. That would be fear. Perhaps it is because you cared for them so much and trusted them so much that in your mind, the world will be a much unhappier place without them. That is sadness. Perhaps you realize that they were better than most and did not deserve to leave. That is selfishness because it is for you that that person existed in those realities. We miss deeply what we have lost that cannot be returned or replaced.

They cry for their loss. If it was a husband or wife that died, because they will be alone now, they didn't expect this perhaps. When a child dies, we cry because children are so precious. Have you heard the saying "A parent isn't meant to bury a child, the child is suppose to bury the parent?" When a child dies we think of the future that will never be, that has been lost, and thus we cry. When a parent dies, we cry because someone that brought us into this world has passed on, someone that maybe we were very close to, and we think not of their moving on to eternity (be it Heaven or Hell) but of our loss and our loneliness so we cry for ourselves.

I lost my 21 year old niece this past March, it was the most heart breaking time of my life. I cried then, as I do now, for selfish reasons. I cry because I miss her so much. I know she is in a much better place and wouldn't want for her to come back to this earth for anything. but I still cry because temporarily, we are apart.

Its like a puzzle, the person has the puzzle completed, but when one piece is missing, its sad because you can't see the picture in the puzzle.

(I just thought of that now, forgive me if you wanted a technical/non-metaphorical answer.)

Because for the first time they realize that person is gone forever, no matter what happens they won't be able to talk to them or spend time with them like old times, NEVER, and thats depressing for most people.

Because the person left behind has suffered a loss of loved one.
It's sad & if you have Faith, you rejoice in your heart for them, but it still hurts.

Man is a highly social animal. It is only natural that the breaking of a social bond would be distressing.

I don't cry when someone dies.

Why would I cry? They are far better off than the living.

BTW, my grandparents, parents, 3 of my 5 brothers and many of my relatives are dead and I did not cry when they died. No reason to cry.

I only cry at funerals for people I don't know. People I knew well, I celebrate.

I knew the people I knew... they'll live on in my memory. Those people who die that I don't know... I've lost the chance to know them, to know their story and to learn what I can from them.
