For 6 weeks postpartum your cervix is still slightly open and it is releasing tissue from you. It is your bodies cleansing time. Also, your body needs to heal. Your uterus needs to retuck itself down, your tissues in your vagina need to heal and your body needs to recoup.

The reason for waiting 6 weeks is to allow your body and everything "down there" to heal. Intercourse to soon after birth can cause an infection. The woman always has an exam at 6 weeks.
Also, during those 6 weeks a woman is extremely fertile. Meaning she could get pregnant very quickly.

Even after a C-section, you need to wait 6 weeks. It's because, no matter what kind of birth you have, your cervix will be open after the delivery, and it creates a perfect environment for bacteria, etc. If you don't want a post-partum infection, don't have sex until your 6-week check up, when you doctor gives you the OK.

So that there is time for proper healing inside and that includes the epsiotomy that is made for the vaginal delivery (the vertical cut that is made by the delivering doctor which runs from the vagina to the rectum) which I am sure could tear if stressed too soon.
There is also a period (bleeding) following childbirth that lasts for many weeks which, however, to most would make no difference.
In most cases people do not wait the full six weeks. I know I didn't. When the woman is ready, believe me, she will make it known

This is time for healing. Everything inside the body has been displaced and needs time to draw back into it's original form and location. There is also generally the stitches from the episiotomy that require healing and need to be kept very clean to prevent any infection.
It can also be quite painful to have intercourse too soon after childbirth. The body needs calming.

The answers that people have given to you are pretty much true. After giving birth, everything inside of our bodies are open and exposed to any and all infections, even if you use protection. Also there is a great chance you may get pregnant again and it could cause you to have severe female problems including possibly a hystrectomy........PLEASE WAIT FOR YOUR 6 WEEK CHECK-UP & YOUR Dr. GIVES YOU THE GO AHEAD FOR SEX. Good Luck

There are certain parts that need to heal.
I know people who have had sex earlier, but it hurt, a lot. It hurts a lot even if you wait 6 weeks. Just be slow and easy and if it's too early stop and try and little later.
Everybody is different. The time is mostly a guideline, as long as there were no complications during the birth.

Actually, you don't have to wait six weeks. I didn't, but I had a c-section. For a vaginal birth, the Dr. probably wants you to wait because of any cuts or tearing that might have occurred. If you have stitches, then those need to heal.

Well, I don't know about others, but I was too sore from my stitches to even contemplate it. Plus, at 6 weeks after birth I was still bleeding and I just didn't have any desire- still don't, if I'm honest.

you need time to heal, giving birth isn't the easiest thing in the world! Sometimes it takes longer than six weeks, depending on the person and how difficult a time they had.

One your body needs to flush everything that's left from the pregnancy out! Two, you are not healed down there, and this is the minimum amount of time needed to heal so you do not get an infection.
