Actually the framers of the Constitution did want a national language, but could not decide on which one. I belive there should be a national language and it should be English (as the vast majority of Americans speak it). It hard to have a national identity when you can't communicate with one another. It divides communities into sections. It puts a burden on the Education system.

No, an "official language" wouldn't pass, however, there are many states that are making amendments to their state constitutions to make English the official state language. Even business contracts won't have to have translations for other languages on them. Check this article out: http://www.us-english.org/foundation/legal/state.asp

If the framers of the Constitution had though it was important to have an official language they would have put it in there to begin with. I don't see why it's necessary. We've always had lots of immigrants coming to this country speaking many different languages and it's up to them to learn English if they want to fit into mainstream society or not if they don't.

It already is. But America is about diversity, there's nothing wrong with other languages. But it is a necessity to succeed in business to learn English as most other countries realize. So of course, Americans should realize this too. Being bilingual is a definite asset.

Yes. A country should all speak the same language for all government agencies and all things. What you speak in your own home is up to you.
