There are several elements to discuss when it comes to a painting. A few are: line, color, light/shadow, texture, content (what it means), etc.

As for principle, I'm not sure...maybe that's another way of asking for the painting's content--it's deeper meaning...what the artist might have intended to communicate through the painting.
