You are correct. Jesus was the rightful King of Jerusalem. A position He, himself, never pushed for or claimed.
The Romans didn't recognize anyone they didn't want to recognize. They let religious leaders hold small amounts of control over the population, but ultimately the Romans dictated.
The fact that the Jewish hierarchy didn't find favor in Jesus is most likely the reason that the Romans didn't pay Him any attention or grant Him any authority as a King/Ruler/Leader.

If you reread the Gospels youll see Pilate in fact addressed the crowd referring to him as their king and put a sign above his cross that said "king of the jews" despite the objection of the Jews.
Despite what the Romans may or may not have thought about Jesus' royal claim, the important lesson to learn is that the JEWS didnt accept him as their king or savior!

Jesus didn't come to earth to be anything, except to do the will of His Father in Heaven. When the crowd wanted to crown Him as King of the Jews on Palm Sunday He didn't accept it because He knew He was about to die for human kind. Jesus mission to this earth was to die and fulfill His Father's purpose to buy back Adam's fallen race.

According to the bible, Jesus was not from the House of David. He was from the House of God which disqualified him from fulfilling prophecy.
Men inherited tribal lineage from daddies, not mommies and Jesus had no daddy.

He might have been of David's bloodline. But, that doesn't mean he was the direct line to inherit the kingdom of Israel/Judah.
