I have a few month old green cheeked conure that we bought at a pet store.
he's been fine up until now, we feed him pallets and seeds and fresh fruits and sometimes vegetables(he doesn’t like them too much) Recently though he began to pluck his feathers, and some might be falling out, I found one of his long tail feathers on the floor. His beak looks almost like its cracked like it as an overlap that growing underneath. I don’t know what’s wrong. He’s still supposed to grow an inch or two, could this be the reason, or could he be sick or could it be that he’s not getting enough vitamins, minerals like calcium?

It sounds like he's molting. Our Greencheek has her first big molt around the age of 6 months. She did a lot of preening and feather grooming during that time, and we thought she was sick too. Our avian vet told us that birds lose their feathers and replace them during a molt. As long as you are not seeing chewed edges, and bald spots, she should be fine. How is her energy level? Is she eating well? How is her weight?( you should own a gram scale) What are her stools like? Is she getting enough stimulation in her toys and in her activities with you?
The beak is continually growing and shedding the outer layer. This most commonly is seen at the sides of the upper beak. The edges look "flaky" and this is perfectly normal.
Your bird should always have a checkup every year and if you didnt' go when you first got the bird, definitely find a certified BIRD VET and get a check up.
Best wishes,
K

Sounds like your bird might be more like 10 months old to me.. I can not be sure about this but sounds like his beak is just sheding. If you can't see skin where he is picking feathers and he has a lot of pin feathers I would say he is just in a molt. Should be a little fussy too. It never hurts to get your bird a checkup. So maybe you should take him to the vet just to be on the safe side. But really I don't think any thing is wrong with him. Is his poop green with white in it? Not very watery? If so no problem.

My birds lose long feathers and dig around at them selfs. Maybe pull one out from time to time but I think the ones my pull are ready to come out anyway.

Good luck..

feather plucking is what nervous birds do. find out the source of what makes him nervous. Or it could be that it's lonely. birds left alone will pluck out of boredom. And some feathers do fall out naturally, I suggest you buy a book on birds, and read it . And get him to a vet ,to take care of that beak problem. in the future if you should notice anything wrong with your bird take it immediately to a vet. if you sit around ans ask questions on this site looking for an answer your bird will die. They die quicker than you can say take that bird to a vet. I'm serious. I lost by best friend of 22 years. I woke up one morning
and noticed he didn't look right and wasn't eating. took him to the vet immediately. still died.

You should take your bird to a vet who treats birds for an initial check up just to be on the safe side. As well as I can understand your description of the bird's beak it sounds normal. He will lose feathers (and regrow them) naturally but if you are sure he is plucking his feathers that is often a symptom of stress or boredom and that problem needs to be dealt with.

Sound like your bird is stressed out. Call the pet store where it was bought. They should be able to help you. Do you ever let it out of his cage, do you handle the bird? If he get out is there plants in your home? Some plants get the birds very sick.

conceal a blanket/towel over the cage to maintain them heat, attempt to maintain them far off from the drafts if accessible, my eco-friendly cheek is a lil over a year previous, she makes that whiny sound while she needs out, i think of that's a valid they make while they pout or wanting something yet i dont think of that's sick
