The emergency crews here in Austin (EMTs and firefighters) get no respect! They put their lives on the line everyday for strangers who won't so much as Pull Over For Them! How could you ever explain to a mother that her child died in fire because you couldn't miss the green light?! Isn't it against the law to not yield to them?! What can I do to change this- before someone I know/love becomes the next victim? I tried the major newspaper here- but to no avail. What's next on my to-do list?

Your best bet is to attend one of your city council meetings. They have an open forum for members of the audience to bring items to their attention.

Stand up and explain your concerns and that you would like the city council to start doing something about it. Have an "emergency crews day" to get awareness out to the city. Have the police spend some extra time ticketing those who do NOT pull to the right when they are supposed to.

If you can, get a bunch of signatures from your neighbors who feel the same way and bring that with you. Then go to the meeting again and again until they do something. THAT's the best way to get something done.

Good Cause and Good Luck!!

It seems you've alredy taken the first step by asking around.
Print up flyers and distribute them. Note- Do not put them in people's mailboxes, but rather in their doors. Mailboxes are a no no.
Start a Blog.
Plan a meeting at your house and see if people show.
You may also see if a permit is needed for a demonstration.
Also, publicity good or bad but preferrably good.
Pins and or T Shirts for your cause.
Major Newspapers won't be much help. I'm not surprised.
Eventually you could get contributers if you got a not for profit status. Companies like to contribute because they get tax write offs for it. You could expand. Expect a few people not to care, but I think it would be well worth your while as far as many would be concerned.
On the flyers, you could list teh address to your blog or web page as well. To print flyers is extrememly inexpensive.

Yeah FREAKZILLA....not to mention the Mo-Pac!

The asker seems to be asking about areas where a motorist COULD pull over but doesn't.

Here in the Dallas area they DO pull over...it's quite disconcerting to look in your rear view mirror and see a fire truck or ambulance rumbling up behind you at 70 mph! ;-0

It sounds as if the police need to be a little bit more involved in enforcement of the laws regarding yielding right of way to emergency vehicles.

Local community outreach programs, a church, schools, the library, your mayors office. These would be my options. However, i live in a very small community. I hope this is of some help to you. I just want to add, I feel your pain on this one, it drives me crazy when i hear and see the sirens blaring and no one is pulling over. I don't know about your state but in mine it is the law. Good luck.

i don't think this is a very serious subject , i lived in austin and the problem is the traffic is so backed up , it would be impossible for an ambulance to go on I-35 at 5 pm or 6th st if the fire was downtown . but you could always start a petition , go to UT you will get a ton of signatures
