birth defects, such as downs syndrome, greatly increase with age.

The risks for certain birth defects do go up with age, however if you take a good, hard look at the statistics you'll see that the odds are still overwhelmingly in favor of a healthy baby. You are also past your peak fertility so it may take you longer to conceive that it would have 10 years ago; then again, you might not have any trouble at all. Plenty of women have healthy pregnancies even into their 40s. Good luck!

Books say that there is an increased risk of Down's Syndrome after age 31, but I can't remember the exact chance of increase. It should be easy to look up online though. I know many, many people who have had kids at your age without any problems. Good Luck!

That is going to vary on your overall health and dad's age. Lots of women have children over 35 just fine...but you should visit with your obgyn before getting started for tips on how to better prepare your body for pregnancy and some standard tests. All risks are going to be very low at just 35...it's over 40 that they really start to rise. Good luck!

brave girl, you are planning to have three??? well, have you been pregnant before?
Anyhow, I am on my second and I think I am done after two, you should wait to have the first baby to decide that you want two more. Some pregnancies don't agree with some people, and others, well they do wonderfully. As far as risks go, they do increase after 35, just how much I think probably depends on how you have treated your body.
I just wouldn't think at any age until you have experienced it, should you expect three!! eeek (just forwarning you)

good luck

ps I am 35

i had my last one at 43. if you are healthy then theres really no reason to be concerned. when i got pregnant the dr's said theres a 2% chance that it could have downs syndrome. he said it begins at age 35 to 40 with a 1% chance and raises every 5 years another percent. as with the other answers, low birth weight (under 7 pounds) which is what they consider the lowest "normal "now a days. have fun raising your family !!!

you will be watched more closely by your o.b. being older means your more at a risk for low birth weight, high blood pressure and a couple more complications. i would talk to your doctor now so that your aware of all the risks. but have no fear i am sure every thing will be fine. my friend just gave birth to healthy twins at 37 years old. congrats on your marriage and future parenthood.

It can make it harder to conceive quickly, and as far as I've heard there's more risks to the babies development. If you take care of yourself and stay healthy and fit, see the doctor regulary things should be fine. Lots of women do it. Good luck!

You should talk to my mom her email is heidinichole@yahoo.com she had my brother at 39 and is now pregnant agian at 43. My brother was born a little early but it had nothing to do with her age it had to do with a preexisting condition of high blood pressure. And we're hoping that with the right doctors this baby will be born perfectly healthy. She also had in-vitro with my brother and got pregnant on her own with this one.
