Do microwaves become less safe as they age? Since the LCD display is not working properly, I want to replace the display. But is it is wiser to replace the whole unit.

replace the microwave...they aren't that expensive anymore and you can get some pretty nice ones for fairly cheap. go to wal-mart...they might be on sale. i'm suprised it still works after 8 years...i'd say you got your money's worth.

I think it would be safe to find a local used appliance part store and see if they have the parts you need. I have a 25 year old microwave that works great.Microwaves don't become 'less' safe as they age unless there is physical damage leaving openings in the case, especially arouned the seal, door, lining of the case or the magnetron. I just fixxed a 14 year old microwave and all is fine. Obviously price is the factor. I'de fix the microwave if the price is right.

It would probably cost you more to repair the old one than to buy a new one. I had a perfectly good microwave with an LCD display that was getting almost impossible to see, but the thing worked so well I couldn't just throw it away. Then I moved into a new apartment that had, to my relief, a built-in microwave, so I was able to get rid of the old one.

Replace the whole unit. It'll be better for you because microwaves do get worse as they age.
