To some degree it was true when I was younger even though I still went out with who I liked, regardless of their opinions. I was definitely more worried about what they thought rather than what I felt for him. That had to do with peer pressure more than anything, as much as it did fitting in with the norm. But at this stage of my life, no. My preferences in men are determined by what I personally like in them, and most definitely are not determined by what friends feel or think or comment upon. For example, when I met and married my second husband my girlfriends didn't like him because he was a direct, no nonsense kind of guy. Their opinions annoyed me because we were adults and I personally didn't judge their preferences. My only concern was that their choice in a partner was not that of an ax murderer or a psycho. Beyond that it was their choice and not mine. Anyway, regardless of their opinions, my feelings for him were what mattered to me and I did as I pleased. Luckily for me I proved the naysayers wrong..but then, I am no longer friends with them, which is equally fortunate for me.

I'm actually the opposite. When too many women are into the guy that I like, I usually get the sense of too much competition and with so many "choices" for him to pick from, its more than likely he'll go for the blonde with long legs before he even looks in my direction. So to me if there are too many women into the guy I like it actually kind of makes me sick. I like someone that "I" have discovered as a hottie by myself and not by the whole status quo of other women.

There are some interesting studies on mate preference in animals. One recent study indicated that female rats prefered male rats who had the scent of other females on them. And a study of killi fish showed that mate preference of young female fish was learned from observing the mate choices of older female fish.

that's true in some cases. I prefer for the guy to tell me how they feel first before I tell them, that way I won't feel like I put my heart and feelings on the line. Women like to have their pride also
