I received a warrant for my arrest since I did not show up for court in response to a speeding ticket I received and so I received a letter in the mail to pay $200 bail...my question is....when I go to the police station to pay the bail will they arrest me first...or can I just go up to the ticket window and pay the bail and avoid being arrested?.....Thanx

I had a warrant issued for my arrest for a court date I knew nothing about. I went to the police station and posted bail; I was not arrested just for going in to pay it. Now, if I had been stopped by the police on my way in to pay the ticket, then more than likely I would have been arrested.

I believe that when you go up to the windo you are arrested which translates to detained but the two hundred dollars serves as bail and allows you to pay off your speeding ticket or reschedule a court appearance, but; just because they don'y slap handcuffs on you and haul you off to the lock up does not mean that you have not been arrested. If they read you your rights and tell you that this is only a bail arrangement and that failure to appear in court will result in you being put in jail next time, that is being arrested whether you go to jail or not. You better just do as they say. Of course, talking to a lawyer first might help just in case you did anything else that is wrong.

No! What you can do is go to the Courthouse and set a court date so you can see the judge. You'll might get the fine lowered or just pay the full amount which is the $200 bail if you don't want to go to court.

They will "formally" arrest you, but you will be allowed to post bail right away. If you don't go and "turn yourself in" (pay the bail), then if they catch up with you on the street, you will be held in jail, and someone else will have to post a higher bail for you; you will not be allowed to pay your own bail.

I just read coragryph's answer - with him being a lawyer, I would definitely listen to him over me. But either way, pay the bail and take care of things before it gets to be bigger. . .

Now I think right now, you are thinking that it would have been a hell of a lot cheaper and a lot less hassle to just show up for court and pay the ticket, right??

No, you need to pick a day when you're not working, turn yourself in, allow them to process you into a holding cell where you will wait for hours until they process your bail or you see a judge who sets your new court date and THEN process your bail. If you go in around 7 a.m. in the morning you might be out by 7 p.m. at night. There is quite a lot of paperwork they have to go through and remember you aren't the only individual they have to process.

I would call then go pay the fine. You probably will have to pay cost of courts, but the judge can send you to jail for contempt of court, (not showing up like you promised)

When you get a ticket, its not an admisson of guilt, just a promise to either appear in court, or pay a fine.

If the letter referred to the payment as bail, payment would be treated as bail and you should not be arrested.

If you want to be sure, check with an attorney licensed in your state.

the warrant is for the non payment so if you pay, that cancels the warrant...or should... if they show up after pay you can show them a receipt.

if they show up they are incompitent...but....you know the government don't count on them talking to each other
