To create a fresh uterine lining for the fertislised ovum to attach to and be nourished from.

The cycle starts by maturing an ovum (the egg) in the ovary to be fertilized.
It is then released into the fallopian tube where it may or may not meet up with some sperm. If the ovum is fertilized, it will finish its trip into the uterus, bury itself into the thick, blood-rich lining and continue to grow into a baby.
If it doesn't meet with the sperm, it will finish its journey into the uterine cavity, and without the hormones produced by the zygote (the developing embryo), the uterine lining will slough off and the menstruation portion of the cycle starts.
After the bleeding is complete (typically less than 7 days), the cycle starts all over again, with the uterine lining (the endometrium) thickening and preparing for the potential implantation of the embryo.

In short, if a woman doesn't get pregnant, she has a period, so that she can be ready the following month to try to get pregnant again.
