I have thick dark brown hair and I'm looking to dye it a Metallic Silver or White color. I've read about using peroxide to bleach it out, but I've also readI could damage my hair in doing so if I'm not careful. I have no experience in dyeing hair, so I'm worried I might mess up. Is it necessary to bleach it first or can I pull off the dye directly?

when you get your hair lifted at a salon they either use ammoniated color mixed with peroxide or bleach mixed with peroxide. you cant just use on or the other. the peroxide and heat open your hairs cuticle so that that bleach or ammoniated color can remove pigment from your hair. I think your better off leaving it up to a pro so you don't end up with orange hair!!!!! to find a color expert in your area visit www.redken.com and make sure if you go that lite to get a good deep condition!!!

Unless you're already blond, you'll need to bleach or lighten your hair. Almost ALL professional bleaches (even in the hair salons) use peroxide of some kind. Do NOT use straight Peroxide... use the right kind! For best results, go to a salon -- or at least have a friend who has done it before help you out.

Bleaches come in various strengths. It comes in two parts - bleaching powder and peroxide. You can buy it in a kit or separately from beauty supply shops. The strength of the bleach depends on the strength of the peroxide you choose. Peroxide also comes in liquid or cream form. Use a liquid one if you plan to dilute it, otherwise a cream one is slightly easier to work with. The most common strengths are 20 volume, 30 volume and 40 volume. Stronger peroxides are for medical use and should not be used on hair (it will cause too much damage and can really harm your skin).

Always remember to do a sensitivity test before using bleach or permanent dye.

For your dark brown hair, go to a professional hair supply (like Sally's) and select "30 volume," which is right for YOU and should get your hair pale blond in one process although sometimes 2 are required. If you find any orange patches after shampooing out the bleach it should be reapplied to these areas only.

Before bleaching you MUST do a strand test. Not only will this tell you how long to allow the bleach to process, it will also indicate how much damage has been caused by the bleach. Most people won't notice much damage but if you regularly straighten your hair, have relaxed or permed hair you should consider bleaching carefully as your hair may be severely damaged by the bleaching process.

Snip a few strands of hair at the back of your head, as close to the roots as possible, where no one will notice. Tie the hair together with thread or use tape to stick it together. Using a plastic spoon mix one spoonful of bleaching powder with one spoonful of peroxide in a non-metallic bowl. (If you're using a blond dye there will be instructions for a strand test included, but it's usually the same quantity of each liquid mixed in a non-metallic bowl.) Don't mix it all up at once. Bleach and permanent dye will stop working after a while and the mixture shouldn't be kept. So... dip your strand of hair into the mixture, making sure it's completely saturated. Check the hair every five minutes by wiping off a small amount of bleach with an old cloth and reapply if the colour is not light enough. In this way you can estimate the time needed to bleach your hair.

The colour change from black to white. The first colour change in brown hair will be to orange then yellow then light blond, red hair will turn yellow before pale blond and the first colour change for dark blond will be to pale blond. To get black hair pale blond takes much longer than to get dark blond hair pale blond and therefore more damage occurs (depending on hair type). To turn dark hair white it is best to bleach it to pale blond and use a white toner rather than bleaching it until it's white.

It's best to get a "bleaching kit"

What you're wanting to do to your hair is not dye it. You're wanting to lighten it. No 'dye' lightens your hair....bleach does. The dye just coats the hair...bleach strips and therefore alters it. All of the moisture in your hair will be sacrificed, and you will most likely experience plenty of breakage over time if you use products and heat processes on it. You need a well-paid pro to do your hair this way. I advise against it, but you probably have your mind made up, so stick with a pro.

If you use straight peroxide..your hair will turn orange! You need to get it a light color(not necessarily bleach it) Then apply the color to it. Good luck with that!
You wanna look good without causing a lot of damage to your hair! =)

find a dye that matches the colour you want. with bleaching it it don't matter if you are careful or not you can kill your hair then you will have to keep dying it to keep a color, because you will always look like you are like 80 or 90 years old. you dont want that if you are young.

the dye wont take over your natural hair colour so to get it the colour you want you will deffinately need to use peroxide...why not get that part done at a hair salon if you're unsure then if anything goes wrong its them who will be at fault

no, if you do then it will be bleached, shiny and unatural. just get one of those diy dye kits that you can do it at home. it doesn't cost much and they do have it in those colours.

don't it weakens your hair follicles and later lead to hair falling out. if you have no experience i suggest going to a salon/barber and asking him to do it and show you how you can do it yourself.
