GREAT idea! You are definitely an Independent Thinker! Any computer can do useful work after booting alternative operating systems from floppies, USB cards, CD's or DVD's - or from the hard drive. The ONLY reason Windows is on the hard drive is because Redmond bullied almost all of the computer manufacturers to do so, leveraging its monopoly powers.

If it was up to me, part of the Microsoft monopoly settlement would be to make it ILLEGAL for Windows to be pre-installed on any computer. There should be a CHOICE made convenient to all purchasers of computers: a list of operating system options should appear at boot time, with the cost clearly spelled out and due only at the time of clicking! My choice on that list would be FREE!

Install Linux (which costs nothing), then ZAP windows! Actually, you might want to dual-boot Linux and Windows, as Windows off of the Internet is fairly trouble-free. Nay, ZAP Windows!

Go for it - and good luck!

If you remove Windows from your PC, your computer will be like a blank piece of paper. Not much use untill you put something on it. A computer cannot run without an operation system (OS) such as Windows. There are alternatives to Windows, however, the most common alternative for the PC being Linux. If you're interested in a new operating system, a good Linux distribution to begin with is Ubuntu.

Knowing your reason for wanting to get rid of it would help. If it is to install a different operating system make sure it is a compatible system for your computer. Make a backup of your system before starting. Install your new system and good luck for compatibility.

Your computer would become a very expensive paper weight unless you put another operating system on it.
