this is an old theological argument and it has been answered many ways

the most common religious response is that God chose to give people free will so that they could chose to do right or wrong

He knew that many people would make the choice to do wrong and that would result in much misery

But forcing people to choose correctly means no real choosing

parents have a similar problem as their children grow
they know that children will make wrong choices but as the kids get older they know they have to let them choose more often rather than choosing for them

the roots of this question are answered by what a person believes is the purpose of man

if God wanted automans that would react automatically to God's will instantly every time, He would presumeably have created those, to whatever purpose could be achieved by that

if God wanted sentient, humans who could choose, and become part of a greater something, then He would create something like our universe

GOD planted a vineyard, we are the grapes. He wants people to want to have a relationship with Him by their own free will. So people have a choice. Many people choose the wrong thing. There is no good without bad there is no value without variance.

God CAN know the future but chooses not to where our free will is concerned. All this wickedness has been allowed by God because he is fully capable of undoing all the bad effects of it and so that we will be able to decide if we would rather be ruled by ourselves or by him..

Honestly the only way to stop it "in the beginning" as you stated would have been to eradicate all of us.

Instead, he took mercy on us and instead of eradicating us, he forgave us, but we still have to endure the punishment for our actions.

The good news is, the punishment period will come to an end, we are just not sure when.

Because unlike you He knows what still is coming and there are many more things to haqppen before it is finishedd and then we will all see. You don't tear an artist apart before he is finished his painting do you?. You are still in the middle of it all.

God knows what he is doing.

Free-will for humans is a part of his purpose (free-will is needed for true love to be possible; and for true character and integrity to be developed in us)...

---

The Christian God indicates that one reason why he created the Universe, was for life to exist, and for humans to exist.

Our Universe is His "art project"; that is why it is so incredibly beautiful. And our Universe is His "scientific and engineering" creation; that is why it is so full of science and engineering, and we are learning this as we crawl in his footsteps via mathematics, physics, cosmology and molecular biology.

Earth is boot-camp for humans to come into relationship with him, and then for our experiences to provide opportunities for us to grow.

We fulfill the purpose for which God created us when we choose to come into relationship with the Christian God (based on what Jesus did for us on the cross)... and then live in daily relationship with Him.

For a brief explanation of how to come into relationship with the God of the Universe, see http://www.godsci.org/gs/new/essence.html

Cordially,
John

Interestingly, Christian dogma never claims that God is sane.

1st, I don't want to serve a God who thinks like you or me.
His ways are above are ways and his thoughts are above are thoughts.
God gives us free will. He wants us to worship and serve him because we choose to. Not because we were programed to.
