notice any tiny grey moths flying around? That's what the worms turn into after snacking on your food. Then they fly around laying eggs in your other food before dying. You usually bring them home from the grocery store without even knowing it. Check all of your dry goods well and throw out anything infected. look closely, sometimes all you can see are webs in the corner of the box

You don't indicate how or where you purchased the rice or what kind of packaging it was sold in. Most commercial rice is safe but depending on what happens to it in transit or on the grocer's shelf, you can bring home these pesky bugs. Do you buy rice in bulk or in sealed packages? Do you transfer the rice into one of your own containers? The whole process has to be clean or you run the risk of unwanted infestations. Throw the rice out and thoroughly clean & dry any container you plan on using to store grains, pasta & rice. When you bring these products home, open the package and spread them out on a clean, dry cookie sheet and take a good look. If something has actually laid eggs in the dry goods, you may not be able to "eyeball" them. My guess is that the infestation occured on the grocer's shelf or in transit. What is the origin of the rice: Domestic or imported? With careful shopping in a clean, reputable store and careful scrutinty, you should be able to avoid this nasty situation in the future. Also, try to only buy as much produict as you'll need for several meals.....unless you have a very large family or eat rice several times a day, it's best to buy in smaller quantities. And finally, use a glass container with a lid that has a plastic "air-tight" top. Good luck!

There are a type of pantry moths that like to get into rice and pasta and lay eggs in there--this is what the worms are--moth larvae. More common in farmhouses for some reason. If you have them I don't know how to get rid of them. Just make sure all your pasta and rice are sealed in plastic containers.

They are meal worms. The mealworms laid eggs in the rice plant while it was growing. The eggs from the meal worm are not taken out during the processing of the rice and after a period of time they will hatch out at room temperture. I keep all my rice, wheat and cornmeal products in the fridge because of this.

Either the rice had larvae in it or a fly laid some eggs before you sealed it up. Worms don't materialize out of nowhere.

First of all throw it out!

Secondly, the worms got in the rice because it wasn't in an air tight container.

Store all of your food in air tight containers to keep this from happening again!!!

When I was young my father found little bugs in the flour. He, being a hard core perfectionist, and not one to tolerate invasion, went on a mission, to discover the source of the bugs. He ended up callling the University of Alberta, where we lived at the time, and they told him it was one of two things. One, if you rent a place where there is only a wall between you and other tenants, there are almost certainly bugs in the walls, and it doesn't matter how clean your cupboards are, sooner or later you will find them in your food. Two, when you buy food at a grocery store, there are probably eggs in it, waiting to hatch. When you bring the food home and put it in your warm cupboard, especially if there is any humidity at all, they will show up in your food. We stored all of our dry goods in the freezer as a kid, it doesn't change the possibility of eggs, but at least you think you are eating bug free food.

when you left the container open fly's paid the rice a visit and layed their larvae (maggot's ) although they're considered to be high in protein !
i wouldn't recommend that you keep the rice any longer -less you wanna see them bloom !! toss it and keep the next batch in a canister and not in it's package !
