I am worried that my daughter has spinal bifida occultabecause I found out that a patch of hair on the back could be a sign. My daughter has a patch of brown hair on her lumbar saccaral area. She does not have any sign but complains of lower back pain alot. If you know anything about this please let me know because i am trying to decide if I should take her to the doctor for an MRI. Please help me.

Spinda bifida occulta is a variation of spinal bifida, but varies from myelomenigiocele and menigiocele. Myelomenigiocele occurs when both the menegies and the spinal cord bulge into a sac that is left open from an underdeveloped spinal column. Menigieocele occurs when just the menigies (the layers that surround the spinal cord) bulge into the sac. Spinal bifida occulta occurs when the spinal column is intact, but one of the vertebrae is underdeveloped. There is no risk of paralysis in this case, unless, of course a traumatic injury happened.

A birthmark or a harry "tuft" over the central potion of the lower part of the spine is often a sign of spina bifida occulta. Spina bifida occulta is primarily an incidental finding, but may be associated with back pain because the sites for ligamentous and muscular attachement are limited. In rare cases, an instability may occur. This may also be relatively harmless unless neurological signs of radiating pain, and or weakness occur. Spina bifida occulta can be detected on a simple x-ray. It may certainly be worth a visit to her physician.

If you are truly worried then the only way to reassure yourself is to take her to the doctor. She may not need a MRI but you will not know for sure by asking this question on this forum for you can get incorrect answers as well as correct answers.

how old is she.. no rush but at her next check up tell the doc about the hair patch. sounds like a birth mark to me though. the pack pain could be almost anything, and may be more a problem as she gets older..
