you have to be able to figure out the exposure. a dedicated light meter will do this better than an in camera meter.

Light meters are used to get an accurate measurement of the light on a subject. This data is then used to help make decisions about how to manually set up a camera to get good exposure in the picture.

Earlier cameras did not have onboard electronics to meter the light or to automatically set up exposure. The light meter helped the photographer do these thing correctly.

Today's cameras have built-in light meters and computer controlled exposure. So most people can get good photos using the automatic controls. More expensive cameras have very accurate internal light meters.

However, there are some situations where better images are still obtained using manual controls. Professional photographers and serious hobbiests may find that they can get better images using an external light meter.

Using a light meter is just part of complex process of using manual camera controls. You can learn more by reading about photography techniques in books or on the web, or by taking advanced photography classes.

the light meter should be in the middle so the picture is correctly exposed.
these can be done in four ways:
1. Change the F-stop/aperature (the lower the more light entering higher the light meter)
2. Change the ISO setting (the less the more detail and the lower the lightmeter)
3. Change the shutter speed (the faster the lower the light meter)
4. Change the light (only works indoors)

With a light meter, you set the film speed in the meter, then use the meter to figure out what lens settings you need to properly expose the film for a good photograph. You will see a lot of possibilities insofar as shutter speeds are concerned and what settings.

I usually bracket my shots, shooting one stop, possibly also 2stops more open than the meter says and then or or two stops more stopped down to give me a range of photos from which I can choose the best.

To be sure of the amount f lght available to determine the exposure. Professionals take readings at many points to ensure the light is correct.
