My father-in-law suffers from senile dementia. There are very few things that he is able to do for himself and has become an enormous burden on his wife.
He never was an intellectual, but he had a certain ability with his hands. He was able to weave baskets out of twigs and he was lethal with a scythe and sickle. He came from a very rural background where the ability to do manual work was rated higher than someone's I.Q.
When we noticed that his motor abilities were diminishing, we gave him manual tasks to keep his brain working. Being agile with one's fingers needs mental agility too.
Ask yourself where your strengths lie. What is it you wish to maintain or improve? Doing cryptic crosswords is good for lateral thinking. Sudoku, is good for logical problems. Even the humble puzzle can improve our mental agility.

You can download ccleaner for free here: http://bit.ly/1Bk5V5C
First open CCleaner
Go to the Cleaner tab and you will be confronted by a very confusing lineup of checkboxes.
To make this brief, below is my recommended setup:
Under internet explorer check temporary internet files, cookies, and last download location. Most users don't really need this stuff. keep history and bookmarks unchecked, history is a maybe, but you don't want to lose bookmarked sites. You can normally leave Windows Explorer, System, and Advanced alone.
Run CCleaner and it will start deleting files.
afterward it will present you with a list of the files deleted, you really don't need to go through it as it will be several pages long.
The registry cleaner is recommended for slightly more advanced users. Use it after uninstalling programs as they will often leave behind incorrect registry entries.
If you decide to run Registry cleaner then review the items detected and always back up the registry (I keep a folder aside for this)
The Tools tab lets you uninstall programs and set startup programs. Why do you need this if Windows has all of these features? Especially with Vista Home Ed. The windows defender software explorer( startup programs) doesn't pick up some entries (however software explorer is easier to use).
Using CCleaner to uninstall programs and then check for leftover registry entries takes less time.
Under Options you can determine how CCleaner cleans your files. I leave this alone.

This is the easiest thing to do, reading books, using your imagination, day dreaming, playing chess and other strategy games, researching a new word and trying to use it as much as possible in a day, expressing yourself freely, taking up a hobby.
You don't need to waste a few hundred £££'s to do this, just entertain yourself and make sure you are always thinking, even if it's about stupid things, it keeps your mind going and also increases memory

There is no exercise known to man, make a mental note to learn something new every day. Then by the time you get to my age you will have a head full of rubbish, and like me always seem to have the answer.
Notice I did say SEEM to have the answer.

watch the smart channels, like discovery, history, national geographic....also, word puzzles are good. you could also read, even if its just a novel and not something very important. or read the newspapers...a lot of things help to keep your brain active, you just need to find out what you enjoy doing to accomplish that. blessed be.

yeah, stop playing video games.
get a college education, go out to the real world and get a job as a professional (lawyer, doctor etc. ) Believe me, you'll get plenty of mental exercise to 'keep the brain sharp'.
