I have to believe, you realize the life span of any animal is less,,,usually than that of it's keeper. Certainly a 'first" pet is ingrained into ones life and soul, and replacing that animal isn't an act of selfishness or a personal attack on the departed pet.
In your case there is the issue of the animal also being part of the lives of your children. At those ages, I'd likely pick a calm, medium sized animal, one that will be OK with mauling by baby children and one they will grow with. It need not be a puppy, but I'd find one that was young enough to last into the teen years, at least, of your children.
Your daughter seems to already have accepted that the death was natural and has decided that her comfort level allows a belief that the dog is in a good place,,even in missing the dog.
You might approach getting another with your daughter, by continuing the "notion" of Angels,,, and allow that THEY have offered another dog, to keep her company.

If or when you decide to add another little friend, I'd just be sure that the children know you are not *replacing* Mittens, just helping out another animal that needs a family to love it and be it's friend. Mittens must have had a wonderful life with your family, and I'm sure another pet would be just as glad to share your home. Golden Retrievers are the best family dogs I've encountered. Labs are the same way. But mutts can be just as friendly. I'd find a good, humane animal shelter that you feel comfortable browsing in.

So so sorry about your loss. I think having pets is wonderful. I can't imagine growing up without a dog. They teach us so much. Can't you see your 2 and 3 year olds reading out loud to a precious pup! The therapy they provide in so many different ways is unreal. Keep an open mind and when you decide. and the time is right....remember, SAVE A LIFE, ADOPT A PET!!!!
God Bless

I don't think that there is anything wrong with getting another dog. Maybe not a puppy but something a little older that is ready to play with the 9 year old and has patience to deal with the babies.

our beloved dog passed away she was9 also the heart n soul of the family she had been moms shadow and when mom passed away she became mine we waited 8 months to gett another one i just couldnt take to the new dog i kept comparing her to my beloved baby we have had her 3 years ive finally gave her a chance now shes not baby girl nor will she ever be but i love her not the same but just as much i guess what im saying is try a cat or bird for starters because another dog only reminds you of the other one it takes time and i feel guilty for comparing this loveable dog to my old one and losing two whole years of her love

Sorry for your loss. Dogs are a family member and it sucks.
I waited a short while and then went out and got a puppy becuase I love dogs and can't live without one. Do some research and find a dog that is good with little kids. Sounds like you prefer big dogs...try a retriever of some kind....they are happy

If you are not ready for a dog, get a cat or maybe a guinea pig, a small animal. Before long, I bet you will be longing for a dog too.
