1st thing - your room size, too big not good for small room
2nd thing - your bufget, the higher the better
3rd thing - what will you be watching most of the time, HD program or normal NTSC program
get the one with highest resolution (1920 x 1080), fastest response time (Philips have one with 3ms, normal will be 8ms), highest contrast ratio and highest brightness (normal 550cd2)

Be patient-- the price of these things will be dropping soon. Actually, they already have, because I have been following the ads in the Sunday paper for several months.
You should check out the ratings of different brands from Consumer Reports, and have a helpful store clerk discuss different brands with you.
But I have to ask an important question-- what good is a fancy, big TV when the channels show such schlock??

aspect ratio the higher the better usually, say it is 1000:1 that means there are 1000 different colors from the a=darkest point to the lighest point 500 to 1 meaasn there are only 500 points 3000 to 1 measn there are 3000 points from darkest to lighest but it also meas that your t.v lights will prob burnt out quicler
