of course..... whatever you take in passes directly on to the child through the milk...... for the sake of your baby stop smoking or being around people who smoke while your breastfeeding..... the effects of the second hand smoke leaving your clothes is enough to give your child health problems later on in life

Please bear with anyone who is unkind in their response, that's just the way it goes sometimes. But I looked into this as well, for the same reason, and what I found (I wish I could remember where) is that - If and when you must smoke, do it AFTER you breastfeed (Maybe a doc or rn could explain why... is it similar to metabolizing alcohol?) - The amount of harm coming to the baby is not from the breastfeeding, but the secondhand smoke that may be on you... remember to always wash up, brush teeth, etc. And for goodness sake, smoke outside, away from baby. (I'm quite sure you are doing this but it had to be said!) - If there are traces of nicotine that get into breastmilk, it will most likely manifest in an agitated, wakeful baby (those would be the effects)

First of all let me say this...I am going to give you the benefit of the doubt and NOT assume, as everyone else did that you are talking about yourself and your baby.
Yes there are harmful effects from doing anything like that while breastfeeding a baby. Taking cold medicine and anything else like even Tylenol can have harmful effects.
