what do you think of this idea I have suddenly thought of ?
When the police take a car that is not taxed, licenced etc,and instead of crushing them why dont they sell them on,I am sure the cash would be welcome.

i'm a police officer, have you seen the state of most the cars that get seized under these powers, a large proportion of them are death traps that would never get insurance anyway...... its good they are destroyed

but for the few that are in good nick, i agree.... but usually in those cases the owners come claim them back...... remember they only get crushed if the owner doesn't come pay the £120 to get them back. So usually the ones that dont get claimed are not worth £120

The police DO seize vehicles for a variety of reasons, however there still needs to be due process, where there is a court hearing on the seizure. Also if the Police DO seize a vehicle they would have to pay it off, something they really do not want to do. In Illinois the Police notify the lender and they usually repo the car, if not and it goes back to the offender and he/she is stopped again, the PD can now seize the car and do not have to pay it off.
As said before it also depends on the condition of the car......most are pieces of ****, the ones that are not still owe a lot of money on them.

It was on the news recently that one police force was donating these seized cars to the local colleges for mechanical students to work on. Thats a good idea because its giving back to the community.

I think this law is fantastic... if you get stopped uninsured you get the car immediately seized. Why should people drive about uninsured? I spend a fortune on insurance, tax, mot... and it annoys me some people seem to think they dont have to... which in turn makes my premiums even higher because i am covering for the shortfall of these idiots. If i am unfortunate to be involved in a car accident with an uninsured driver, it means i have to pay out AGAIN. I work hard for my money, and i work hard to pay for the privilege of a nice car.

Because most of these cars are unroadworthy heaps of junk with no MOTS ...that's why there not taxed or insured...its not worth the bother to the people who drive them .
if they had to MOT tax and insure them it would cost more than the car is worth so they would rather risk the crusher and a teeny fine.
A better idea would be to actually fine the real cost of tax and insurance and an MOT cert.because I dont know anyone who can do all that for less than £100(a typical fine for this offence)

Most of these cars are worth less than the cost of insuring them. Many do not have a MOT certificate because of their condition. Such cars are also used / shared by criminals who don't register them.

The only option is to get them off the road and so crushing is the best option.

Its a good idea but don't you think the person it has been confiscated from might want it back if they see it on the road? It would cause more problems than it solves.

Shame, it would be a good cheap way to buy a car though

The state regulates what law enforcement can and cannot do. Usually, only drug cars can be confiscated and most of them are either recycled into police work, such as DARE cars, unmarked cars, or cars for undercover work.

Anything else would be up to the state.

Some places sell them at auctions. Running road-worthy cars can get a salvage title others can be sold for parts.

Cars that are seized are usually used by the police or auctioned if they are road worthy. They are only crushed when they are unfit for use.

i think this law is ridiculous, just imagine u bought a car on finance and you were broke or waiting to get paid or had unforseen circumstances and your car got crushed, that can cause some people to commit suicide as they will still have to pay for the car. i think they should just get fined. crushing cars do not not make sense anyways better to sell them to other neighbouring countries.
