As long as its not hurting him, I wouldn't worry about it. I walk my Pitt Bull quite a lot, and when I can't get him to stick to the grass that happens to his claws. The upside is I very rarely have to cut them, because they're worn down by our walks!

Look into a product called "Soft Claws". They are nail caps for dogs. I use them on my 3 Labs. It also protects the floors(and people) from scratches. You cut the dogs nails then put them on with a special glue. They can stay on up to 12 weeks. This should help his nails from peeling as they will be covered and protected. Good Luck.

Like splitting or crumbling when cutting them or breaking off on their own or flaking? can you be more specific?? Sounds like maybe some 3V caps (omega 3 fatty acids supplements) should help. You should talk with your vet and have a blood panel to rule out disease or lacking in a vitamin or mineral. As dogs age, their skin, hair coat and nails tend to be not as strong and healthy. In younger dogs especially, this can signify a problem, sometimes as simple as something lacking from it's diet.

Consult a vet and be prepared to probably buy some 3V caps or the like and to have some blood work done for reassurance.

A little bit of nail is fine... but I agree with you. Long nails are kinda gross.
