No, it's their veil of denial.
On the surface they look like religion can help them out. But if you ever study their pattern you'll see that they fall (hard) while turning away from God (acting very blasphemous), and then they want pulled out so they pick a new church/ religion. So, they go head over heel into religion and don't take the time to get to know God, or how to permanently change their behaviors through God. Eventually, they'll hear that "It's sinful" and they'll high-tail it away from God/ Church.
Then they'll be blasphemous against God (again

Because they all know that it was Jesus that died to take away their sin. If not for him we would all still be hooked on drugs, or dead. You may just be right when you say he is their new drug of choice because you can always feel high when Jesus is in your heart. I can't explain it something just happens though.

Some drugs are good for you and some are bad for you. I think having a Jesus fix is a good thing. ;)

Groups like AA say that belief in a higher power is essential to recovery. There is no recovery without God.
