I am headed to NYC for the first time with my family and was wondering where is the best place to stay that is between Statue of liberty and Times square? My Family and I would like to see ground zero and everything famous we can. I was thinking of driving in from Philadelphia but I can also take the train to Penn station but I didnt know if everything was in walking distance? People keep telling me to stay in NJ across the bridge due to its cheaper and you can take a bus into the city? Please if anyone can answer all these question please do so that I do not get lost on vacation. Thanks again.

If you have a family, I would definitely suggest staying in cheaper as it is substantially cheaper. I recommend the Hyatt in Jersey City. It takes less than 15 minutes to take the PATH train ($1.50 each way) into Manhattan. There is a train that goes straight to the ground zero sight, but honestly there is nothing (ABSOLUTELY NOTHING) to see there and it's kind of morbid. You can also take the bus into the city, but it's more expensive than taking the PATH train.

There are a lot of places within walking distance, especially for adults. Lots of people walk 10 blocks or more to get around. But if you have kids, I would recommend taking the subway, Buses are ridiculously slow, so I wouldn't recommend it.

It's probably easier and more cost effective to drive to NJ than to buy train tickets for your entire family. Also, if you had a car, you could drive to the Bronx Zoo. Taking a subway there would take forever.

Try the Hotel 30/30 on Thirtieth Street between Madison and Park. This is in a Quiet Safe Neighborhood and is within walking distance of Times Square, Union Square Greenwich Village and very close to Empire State Building. Ground zero is about three miles south so it's a long walk. 30/30 is two blocks from the 6 subway which can get you close to ground zero, Chinatown, Central Park. There is also a Ramada Inn on Lexington and 30th. A lot of Tourists stay in or near Times square, but most hotels are pretty expensive there. The problem with driving is the expense of Parking at least $25 a day and more like $50 near Times Square. From either of these hotels you can walk down to Third Ave. where there are dozens of restaurants or to the Union Square area same thing.

It is cheaper to stay in NJ and take the bus, but if you can afford to stay in the City, I highly recommend that over staying in NJ -- it's kinda a hassle taking the bus back and forth every day with a family. With a room in the City you will have much more flexibility relax after sightseeing during the day before you go out to dinner, drop off stuff after you have been shopping, then go out ab enjoy the a nice restaurant etc. If you stay in NJ your choice of restaurants there will not be too good.

This my opinion based on living in NYC for 15 years and being familar with those hotels. Have a great trip.

PS there are at least 100 mexican Restaurants in New York and at least 10 within walking distance of the Hotels I mentioned.

There is a hotel across from Penn Station. I would not stay near Times Square. Also, anything in Manhattan is going to be very expensive. You should look on the Internet to see what the prices are. www.hotels.com; and do a general search for hotel discounts in Manhattan. Taking the train is certainly easier than driving. There are other options; drive to NJ and stay in a motel on Route 3 in the Rutherford or Secaucus area. You can take a bus into the city from there. There are also hotels on Routes 4 and 46, but buses from those areas will take you to the bus station near the George Washington Bridge which is very far uptown. You can also check hotels or motels in Staten Island.

I would definitely say take the train! Unless you can't afford to. There are also VERY cheap buses to NY from Philly and the ride is only 2 hours... no big deal at all! Make sure you look up those Chinatown buses:

Anyway, those are where you can find cheap bus tickets. If you get the bus to Penn Station in NY, you can really get a subway to anywhere you wish to go in the city. If you want to stay by ground zero, there is a really nice Hilton down there right by the World Trade Center subway station (from penn station you can take the E train downtown to it). Otherwise, right around Penn Station, there is the Pennsylvania Hotel on 7th Ave. and 33rd street (not expensive) also on 8th Ave. and 34th street there is the Howard Johnson New Yorker Hotel (again, not expensive). There are MANY hotels in that area... those are just two of the biggest.

Here is a site for cheap/discounted ways to stay in NYC

Good luck, have fun!

The Pennsylvaina Hotel, Super 8 Times Square
Staying in NJ is way cheaper than NYC, but the busses only run so late and you have to carry all the crap you buy with you all day. Atleast if you stay in Manhattan you can drop it off at the room.

Betwen now and the end of the year NYC is very expensive. ALL hotels jack their prices up.
NJ is a better bet. Certain towns are 10-15 minutes on the train/bust to the city.
