Animals (dogs) are unpredictable. People should always be cautious around dogs they don't know.

I'm afraid of dogs and have been all of my life. Although I've had many, many unpleasant encounters with ferocious dogs, I'm not sure that CAUSED the fear. Perhaps there is no reason. People get phobias for no particular reason sometimes. There are some dogs who completely ignore me, and I'm not really bothered by them. But even if I somehow magically got over the fear of dogs, I'm certain I would never want to have one. The idea of an animal basically drooling saliva all over my face and other body parts is a total turn off.

I think some people may be scared of dogs in general because they can be aggressive, or seem aggressive, especially if they don't know you and you don't know them. And some people, like you and also me, developed a fear of dogs in childhood. I was playing tag with a bunch of friends and a neighbourhood dog, one I knew very well, chased me, attacked me, and when he got me down on the ground he bit my eye. I almost lost my eye (I had other injuries, but my eye was the most serious). This dog (a beautiful black lab) belonged to my next door neighbour, I loved him, and I used to play with him all the time. That's why the shock was so great - not just the attack - but because it was this dog - I couldn't get over it.

I loved dogs then, and I still do - but yes, I never did get over my fear and I wish I would, but I can't seem to help it. And I am very nervous around large dogs.
