I spend 10 years of my life working in restaruants.
Of course most waiters/waitress will tell u the obvious..but:
If everything great, tip good.. Ive even tipped both server & cook.
I get sick & tired of people saying tip should always be done..
People, it should only be done if valid, event then not neccessarily 15%.
For example, I never ever give tips where the only server is the person refilling drinks (buffets, or similar style).
Very rarely honor hotel built in tips. Often paying in cash to avoid it & tip directly when worth it.
BTW, poor service is always the waiter/servers fault, unless it is specifically due to food issues or busboy issues.

Tipping should be a requirement even if service isn't as good as you would have liked. Waiters and waitress only make $2.25 an hr and truly live off of there tips. When you dont' tip you really are affecting there livelihood. Poor service isn't always the waiters/waitress's fault. Maybe a cook didnt' show or even a busboy. Maybe their restaurant mgr didnt' schedule enough people or even something like a tour bus showed up or a huge party of people that didnt' reserve space before hand. These are all things that someone dining out should consider when they think service is so "bad". Look around. Try and put yourself in your servers position. Chances are you would not be able to do the job they do and if you think you could do better try doing it for a week and see how quickly you go running to your comfy non-customer service related job.

In most (if not all) states in the US, waitresses only make a few bucks per hour. The majority of their income comes from tips left by customers (and even then the restaurant usually gets a cut of the tips).
So a tip should be left, but only if the service was good. If you are dissatisfied with the service, a penny will get your point across, hopefully. Not leaving anything at all might make the waitress wonder if maybe you just forgot, but if you leave a penny, he/she'll know that you didn't forget, and that his/her service was shoddy.
Hopefully that'll prompt the server to do better in the future.

I think tips shouldn't be necessary. The waiters ought to do theirs jobs anyway. They were hired by the rrestaraunt. But since they are and the restaraunt underpays them, I like to leave 15 % for a good wait person and 20 % for an outstanding waitperson and 10% or less for a lousy waitperson depending on just how BAD the service was. tick me off enough and that's how much you don't get. leave my party's glasses empty and you'll pretty much go without a tip. if they are happy, we will make YOU happy. We are actually pretty easy to get along with. just check on us every time you are in the area. I was a waitress for a short time so I figured out how to do it. My sister was a waitress as well. The mangement is still responsible for the payment of the waitstaff, I beleive, they just don't want to do it. I don't like being forced to leave a tip by it being included in the bill and then reciving bad service. that's flat out not fair to the customer. if you're gonna MAKE me leave a tip, you better give fabulous service. If I have a choice, I only dine at that type of place once--the first time I find out you MAKE me tip you.

I'm happy to leave a tip, unless I receive very poor service. Generally the service is good to excellent, and we try to leave a standard 15% gratuity, but there have been cases when the service was outrageous, and I refused to leave a tip. One server even pulled my husband aside to tell us that it's rude not to leave a tip, and the server took it personally.
I recognize that many places have tip schemes where tips are paid out by the house, etc. but truly, I vote with my dollar, and if I get crap service, I'm not going to put my money down for it. After 7 years in the retail industry, I can tell you it's expects that anyone in the service industry must maintain an appearance of professionalism, regardless of what's going on.

I leave whatever I feel is deserved. If I have to keep searching for my wait staff then I leave a meager TIP. I have gone to some places that ask for TIPS when the patrons are expected to do all the work like cafeterias, I'm sorry if I carry my food to the table, get my own drinks and then put my dishes on the conveyor belt, I don't leave a TIP. What did they do to make my dining experience easier? By the way TIP stands for "to insure promptness".

I don't mind leaving tips. In fact I always try to leave 15-17% (including taxes) unless the waitress/waiter is really snooty. If they make my kids laugh or smile or like them I leave 20% or sometimes more... especially if they leave mess. We have gone way beyond 20% at times, maybe to a little bit above 30%.

I always leave a tip. I believe that is what they are working for a tip and not leaving it , it feels like stealing from them. That money it doesn't belong to you no more is theirs. You got the service in return from it. It makes me uncomfortable going to a restaurant with friends and they leave 2 dollars for a family of five.. It is embarrassing so we don't invite anybody to accompany us to restaurants.. Be Fair or Karma will come back and hunt you... (All because couple of dollars)

It all depends on my experience in the restaurant. If the food is good, the service is good, and it's quick then I'll leave a good tip.If I have a problem with any of these things I have listed then I leave a tip accordingly.
