I have been taking Nyquil for about a year and a half. I started when I quit a terrible hydrocodone addiction 15-17 pills a day for about 2 years. I started on the methadone program but still felt I needed something to sleep. I had no idea that the nyquil was habit forming until it was too late. Now I feel sick if I miss my nightly dose. I want to stop taking it, but i'm not sure the best way.

Unlike the other morons who have already posted..I know this is a terrible time and a painful addiction you are going through, because I was prescribed Xanax for anxiety and now I am addicted. I cannot sleep without them, my body goes numb, I suffer horrible headaches, stomach aches. It is not a good feeling. At this point you are going to have to go down the same path as me and that is treatment. That is what I am doing. I wish you the best of luck. You cannot stop cold turkey, you have to be weaned off to avoid the seizures. Talk to your doctor.. This may not be the best answer, but I hope I helped a little.

If you really want to stop....go cold turkey! I am a recovering addict and I was addicted to hydrocodone, oxycoton, methadone, crack...you name i was on it...I had came to a point in my life where i wasn't happy and needed help. If you have had enough and know you want to stop, try N/A meetings. You have to consider this: did you ever take care of the first addiction (hydrocodone)? If no, then all you really are doing is replacing one drug with another. After I started going to N/A and working the 12-steps I had to look at why I got high and why I kept getting high. For me it's been an exploration of myself....I love myself today.

Switch to benedryl or get doxylamine succinate tabs (they are the hard to find sleep ingredient of Nyquil which is a suspected carcinogen). Ween off it. The tylenol in Nyquil is going to burn out your liver. Don't go back to Vicodin! Vicodin has up to 750 mg tylenol per pill. Eight pills at once could kill your liver. You are going to be lucky if you have a liver left! You should get your Dr. to do a liver panel (blood test) to check its function. Tell Dr. about your drug abuse.

Slowly wean yourself off of it and if you still need help sleeping try something natural and non habit forming. There is a product from Herbalife called "sleep now" - it's all natural and non habit forming, it works great to help you sleep.

Why you came to Yahoo Q&A for this is beyond me....why not ask your doctor about this addiction.

We aren't professionals here. Heck, most of the people on here are teens or children....and you trust them to give you a good answer about something so serious???
