I have doggie mints and brush his teeth but it is reacurring, I don't see any aggravated teeth or gums and he doesn't act like anything hurts. It is not just regular bad dog breath, I have three dogs and grew up with dogs, his breath smells like POOP. I have had dogs with breath problems but they usually cease and are not usually this bad.

If it is 'rotten' smelling, take a look at his teeth, and look for redness/swelling of the gums...He may need dental work..If his teeth appear fine, you can give him the Rope chew toy.
Get a good quality rope toy.( not the dollar store kind, but the Hartz ones at the grocers are fine) ..the ones that appear to be twisted string tied in a knot. Soak it in unsalted broth. Dry it in a very slow oven. Hhe will try to chew all the falovor out of that, and it works as dental floss to keep his teeth clean, and his breath fresh.
If he grows tired, (couple of months)as the flavor is gone, just wash by hand, and re-soak.

You might switch his food to Canidae..It really keeps the teeth sparkling clean...and is a very nutritious kibble..Even my old dogs have white, clean teeth.

If the breath has a winey odor, it could be a symptom of diabetes..

Besides exploring the link I have given you below, I would like to tell you that I always found that buying a large bone from a butcher does the trick - have the marrow taken out or buy a marrowless bone because the marrow can cause diarrhoea sometimes. Dog enjoys chewing on bone and scrapes off plaque and other nasties at the same time. Hope this helps. :)

diet is one thing...but I'd be looking at the dog's teeth and gums...these can cause severly bad breath on dogs.

sometimes dogs eat their POOP. because they smell their food. thats probably why his breath smells like POOP.
